From previous posts we have discussed options to combat chronic ear problems such as bacteria and yeast infections.

As stated before my 8 year old has had this since swimming alot when she was about 2 years old and has it coming back year after year. Been on all types of medications and treatments and it always comes back.

I have been washing her ears out daily for 3 weeks with a 50/ 50 mix of water and vinager and her ears are now cleared up.

Plan to continue every day for another week and then taper off and try to get down to once a week.

I like this as I hate keeping her on medications all the time.

Might be something to try if you have not done so already...

On a more civil note,

One of my dogs also has ear problems and I believe I have narrowed it down to an allergy to fish and fish products.

I too kept returning to medications that only handled the symptoms, monitoring feeding finally gave me the clue, then by accident he had gotten into some fish thrown out by a nieghbor and I knew for sure.

Good luck with the ears

Someone recently suggested to me to give a dietary supplement of acidophilus daily.I don't know if that helps but it sounds like it might. Worth mentioning I thought.

I felt the need to add my own experiences with this. My dog has had horrible ears forever. I tried everything. The gentian violet, water/vinegar solution, meds, vet diets, even had him put under to do a deep cleaning. None of this helped. Finally someone suggested using a tiny amount of Boric acid in the ears. I have to tell you that his ears NEVER looked better. I use an ear cleaning solution BIO GROOM ear care which also has bric acid as the main ingredient. His ears are no longer an issue!

Have often do you treat his ears?

I only treat his ears now once very blue moon. I treat them if he gets really itchy and does the head shake, but honestly, I think I have treated him twice in the last year. He is so much happier now.

By using boric acid dilutions (and one must be very careful about what they use) and vinegar (apple cider vinegar is best), what you are doing is changing the pH of the ear skin and canal tissue. Many bacteria and fungi etc., cannot live in an acidic pH. Others can. So one must be very careful not to overdo it. The ear canal is one of the best places on the dog and humans for pathogens to flourish.

I just came back from my vet this morning and asked him about the vinegar. He said you need to be careful with that. A better solution for daily ear rinses and cleanings in the hot humid summertime is Massingale (spelling?). You know the douche.

Why be careful? What was caution concern?

My vet suggested it and did not mention any side effects?
