My current GSD is a year old. I have taken every care to socialise him with people, dogs, other animals etc ever since he was tiny, and was perhaps too successful with other dogs - when on a lead he gets extremely excited when he sees a dog and practically leaps up and down to get to them. When surrounded by dogs such as at a show or at training club he's fine - it's when he sees a single dog when he's out that he gets really OTT! I have been walking him in areas where there are plenty of dogs on lead and he seems to be calming down slowly. He plays very nicely with large dogs. However, he is lately becoming very suspicious of small dogs. He has been nipped twice by small terriers (both times they were off lead and unaccompanied by an owner, and he was on lead). This sort of thing seems to be happening all the time - yesterday we were walking up the road (on lead and under control) when a small dog rushed growling up to us with an owner desperately trying to catch it - unsuccesfully. She had the cheek to say to me 'I'm glad yours is on a lead I'm terrified of Alsatians' as her little s*** was circling us and growling!!!!!! Today an off lead Westie came running up to us and my boy growled. Now I don't blame him for being fed up but I was quite shocked and worried as I am very aware that in the current climate those of us with large, guarding breeds must be very careful not to give anyone cause to believe that our dogs are dangerous. Am I over-reacting to be concerned? I am so fed up of irresponsible dog owners who let their dogs run around out of control - and it always seems to be the small dogs.

I feel for your dog, I hate small dogs too. Punt kick the next one you see not on leash that rushes your dog. I'd relish doing such, right in front of the stupid ass owner that didn't have the heathen under control. I'm sick of the little dogs not having to "behave" because of their size. My rule is if they come within striking distance, I will kick the shit out of them to spare my dog the torment. Their small size doesn't grant them a leash free, crappy attitude pass.

Thank you! I feel exactly the same about small dogs and their owners! I have been getting Echo to sit calmly during such situations but it's not really fair as he needs to be able to defend himself if nec.

Last year my daughter and her dog where "attacked" by a Jack Russel Terrorist. Her bitch doesn't take any crap from any dog and grabbed the dog by it's back, shook it like hell and it ran crying back to it's owner, who was standing agape in his yard. The guy never said anything, what can you say when your in the wrong? My male was bitten on the back legs by a Yorkie who flew out of nowhere from it's yard and who's owners never came outside. That one got my boot in it's butt. They had no fence but a small kennel out front. Obviously the dog wasn't in it! Apparently strolling the neighborhood is more dangerous than once thought. Give me drive by's and dark allies anyday, just spare me the annoying anklebiters.

>"He has been nipped twice by small terriers (both times they were off lead and unaccompanied by an owner, and he was on lead)."

I have a Jack Russell, but I have spent a LOT of work with him. I can't stand yappy, annoying ankle-biters, and I refuse to be the owner of one. I treat him no different than I'd treat any of my GSDs. I don't care how big or small he is, I hold my dogs to certain expectations in ettiquette and don't tollerate any BS.

*agrees whole-heartedly* It's people like that who really piss me off! Just because there dog is small doesn't mean it should be allowed to get away with anything that a large dog shouldn't. *rant* People seem to be under this mistaken impression that since there dog is small it can be allowed to be aggressive, untrained, unruly, and in general complete bastards.

When I had my rottie, she tollerated other dogs, but she wasn't a huge fan of them. She ripped up a terrier pretty good because the owner didn't have it on-lead, and it ran into my rott's face barking and nipping. Who wouldn't have taken a bite out of someone like that? The terrier was lucky it didn't get mauled.

People use the excuse: "oh, he's friendly" or "but he's just a little thing" to justify their dog running loose, and I think that's the biggest load of horsecrap out there.

Forget about punting the ratdog; go after the owner

Ahhh.. A subject close to my heart!  Although my issues don't discriminate against one particular size...  small or large size,  the owners are idiots.

I have to load my dog up in the car to go exercise/work him.   I can't walk up my street to go anywhere because there are a couple neighbors who leave their dogs loose.  Yes, their dog IS in their own yard UNTIL I walk by,  then they get up and come into the street.  I've tried 3 times to walk up my street to go for a walk, and three times I had to turn around and go home before there was a dog confrontation.   I choose to avoid any confrontation because I don't want vet bills, etc.

The owners feel like their dog is under control being in the front yard with them, but that is never the case.  I don't want to have hindsight and hope for the best.  And yes it pisses me off that I have to drive up my street to walk my dog.

Check this out...  This is going to be my new best friend on my walks....

HA.  check out the dog they use as an example.  Give me a break.

If little Sweetums isn't on a leash, report him and his retard owner to animal control!  Kicking a small dog can kill it, and then the kicker is liable.  It's better to throw water on the blasted thing, or throw something at it.

Honestly it boils down to the owners. All dogs regardless of size should be on a leash. Unless things have changed - most towns, cities etc have by-laws specifying this anyways! It makes me so mad when people don't abide by the simple common sense rules of responsible pet ownership. You must have your dog under control at all times. Fence it in or have it on a leash. I know there are many well trained dogs that can go off leash but unless you are in a place that doesn't require leases - leash your dog. Small or large ... any dog can be a PITA. I own a pack of small breed dogs. They are trained not to be yappy. They are always on a leash unless they are in an enclosed area. I would never tolerate that behavior from them. I am sorry that has happened to you but blame the owner not the dog(s).

My sister in law has a Chihuahau that has drawn blood on me more times than I like to remember.  That dog is the terror of it's neighborhood and still they insist it's just a small dog and can't do any harm.  I have punted it when they weren't looking and it finally started leaving me alone.

Last week her boyfriend was walking the dog, unleased, and the Chi ran up to a Rottie and started chewing on it's leg like a cob of corn.  The Rottie just stood their in amazement and never bite back.  Well, the Rotties owners did bite back.  They are now suing my in law for vet bills and they are in danger of having to euth the dog.  Revenge feels sweet and I didn't have to do a thing.  It's just too bad that the Chi had to have such a lousy upbringing.

Chihuahuas are notorious for biting people and larger dogs if they are not properly handled.  It is a shame too because they can be the most wonderful dogs out there.  It is a sin that a dog must pay for the wrong doings of it's owner - pay for it with their life.

I wish irresponsible dog owners would be euthanized and their "problem dogs" retrained properly.  That might solve a few problems.
