Ok - someone had recommended this to me and I thought it was "interesting" advice. Has anyone heard of that prior to a performance/trial or show? It was the first time someone had mentioned it and I can't seem to find anyone else recommending it....so what gives?

do you mean electrolyte powders
by kmaot on 11 June 2008 - 13:06
Well this oldtimer said "sugar water". I know there are electrolyte powders, etc like K9 GoDog etc. But he didn't say that. He actually meant sugar. Thoughts?

My vet has had me use it to boost energy when one of my dogs needed the boost. He has also had me use 1 tbl of glucose added to 3 eggs with milk for an egg nog mixture for my females during the time when they are whelping. It really does seem to help keep their energy up. I have had good success with it for the last 10 years.

At one Dock dog competition I saw someone giving their dog some honey before their run, they claimed it was for an energy burst. I've also been told this is done in agility too. I thought it was weird but never really considered it. I suppose for a short burst of energy it might be logical but for sports that aren't short and quick like SchH it's not practical.

I could see using electrolite's for heat and stress but sugaring up your dog to boost performance is obscene in my opinion.
Why not just dope the dogs like every other sport and cheat with the rest of them. Remember winning is everything..
Dont worry about what it may do to the dog, there are plenty of dogs.

My favorite is the Nupro Custom Electrolyte Formula. I buy it from J-B Wholesale Pet Supply for $44.99 for a 20# pail. This is much more cost effective than any of the designer sports drinks for dogs. Contains: potassium, sodium, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, iodine, selenium, beta carotene, vit C. vit E, lactobacillus--mixed in a dextrose base.

I give sometimes honey water to females during birth . guess sugar water would have to be made out of natrual brown sugar instead of the white . not sure .
