Is it ok to update the old pedigrees with pics out of an old book? I have a copy of the complete gsd copyright 47-52 and there are some pictures of old dogs in there that are not on the database. Thanks!

I think this would be okay with everyone. You are not doing this for financial gain, and the pictures do make the pedigrees more complete. The old pictures are very important because they are rare.

The only thing you might add is in the comments section about each dog, and that would be credit for the source of your information. That would help someone who seeks published information about those dogs.

Thank you Bob-O!  I went ahead and registered the dogs that are not already here but pictured in my books.  I searched the kennel names first to make sure that the names were not mis-spelled in the books and the pedigree and/or photo was not already registered.  Some of them have what I would think are litter-mates but since I cannot at this time be sure, I didn't do anything with the pedigree.  If anyone else knows, they can fill in the blanks or I will if I find out.  These are all dogs that were imported or born in the US in the 20's-30's so I think that's why they have siblings but they themselves are not registered.  The ones who stayed in Germany figure into some of the modern German pedigrees and the ones who wound up in the US are at the back of the American pedigrees, many of which are not registered here, or their blood has been lost.  The scanned pictures aren't as clear as I'd hoped for, but that may either my error or a low quality scanner.  I will update them if I can get a better scan or maybe just take a picture of the picture and use that if it's clearer.

I see plates out of this book and others for sale on ebay occasionally, so it must be a nice thing to have.  And they are pages out of the book; I think it's a shame to take apart an old book to sell the pictures out of it but at least they aren't rotting away in storage.

Thanks again,
Krystin

I think it's great you are taking the time to do this, Karly. These old pedigrees are an important part of the history of our breed.

I just wanted to draw something to your attention. One of the dogs you entered is Etzel von der Ettersburg. If you do a search for von der Ettersburg, it turns up 4 dogs on the PDB. Three of them have names beginning with "E". Two are obviously siblings, having the same birthdate and parents. It is traditional for breeders to give littermates names starting with the same letter of the alphabet, so I think it's almost a sure thing that Etzel is a littermate of the other two dogs!

Also, does the book give any clue as to who the parents of these dogs are? Usually they are listed somewhere, either with the photo or in the text somewhere!

I'd love to get my hands on a book like that! You are fortunate to have come across it! Some of these dogs must be some of the very first GSD's imported into North America. I see the father of one of the dogs you posted was Roland von Starkenberg!
