Does anyone have any experience with feeding Cod Liver Oil to GSD's? Anyone know the advantages/disadvantages?

I have used cod liver oil in the past for my dogs. The only thing is that it is VERY low in omega 3. I use fish oil which is high in omega 3. Here is an article that you all may find very interesting....
Scroll down the page a little and read the article "Fats and Fatty Acids"

I have always fed cod liver oil, about half a table spoon in each meal when fed twice daily. It's great for their skin, hair & nails and I think it gives a great shine to the coat although we originally gave to our first bitch when she was getting old to ease her arthirits.
I think it's just a great all round tonic & is pretty cheap when bought in large quantities as packaged for horses.

Cod Liver Oil is a very good oil however, I personally wouldn't give it every single day. We give it 2 times a week in addition to other oil supplements. Fish Oil (7 days a weeks); Cod Liver Oil (2 days a week); Wheat Germ Oil (2 days a week); Flaxseed oil (3 times a week); Salmon Oil (2 days a week)

I give it every day. The stuff I have has about 1250mg per teaspoon of EPA and DHA plus vit D A and E.
The fishoil I take myself I slightly higher, but the cod liver oil is cheaper. I use human grade for for my dogs too

I prefer to feed FBO rather than CLO as the Omega 3 is higher and the DHA/EPA is too in good products.
The reason I do not give CLO is because it contains fat soluble vitamins A and D both of which are stored in the body rather than eliminated as water soluble vitamins are. Both vitamins can be toxic to dogs, Vitamin A in particular causes liver damage in excess. If you are feeding a commercial/raw or home made diet with sufficient Vitamin A then there is no need for extra; it certainly should not be given to pregnant bitches.
