my bitch suffered with a mild case of mastitis with her last litter and i was just wondering if there is anything i can give her or do to prevent this from happening again.
this is what i have done in the past
cut pups nails every week
bathed in warm water
and massaged teats once a day with a warm towel
good diet
thanks in advance

The best cure for mastitis is active nursing so make sure she doesn't have the pups on a "schedule". Had a bitch who was like a modern day working mother. Would go in and give them 10 minutes and that was it until next feeding time. She had extra rich milk so pups did fine but one breast blew up suddenly. I started to shut her in with the pups rather than give her so much freedom and thank goodness it resolved nicely tho also we did put her on antibiotics .
The other thing I think may have contributed was too much carbohydrates thru the dry dog food. Also cut down on that and increased the raw when she started to have a problem.
I know the literature suggests that once they have a problem they are likely to have one again so would be very interested in hearing from folks whether they found this to be true or not.

...mastitis shouldn't last long in a dog with a known case and the right treatment. If it's concidered cronic it could be linked and most likely is the thyroid or diabetes which will lead to cancer. Most often it's due to dehydration and poor circulation in the breasts.
Drinking lots of water or Pedialyte is a must... and a good warm swim in the hot tub for 10 mins two days in a row will cure this almost instantly. Make sure the tub jets are on.... take care and concider the weather around you, don't do this outside on a 90+ degree day.
You can substitute the Pedialyte with a mixture of 2 quarts water, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1 tsp. salt, 7 Tbls. sugar. You can also add a packet of Cool-Aid sugar-free for taste.
JMO. Opinions do vary. Consulting your Veterinarian is the best possible interaction.

I did some research on it and Calcium lock is the fault of having Mastitis....
Somewhere in the diet was a calcium overload of the wrong kind of calcium eaten or ingested.
