I received the following email and do have pictures, but I can't get them to post on here, they were sent to me in MS Word, if you need pics email me toI'll forward it along!!!
Ear tattoo is either EM4175 or GM4175 there is definitely nothing after the 5 in his ear. I have shaved both sides of his ear, shone a light through, used a magnifying lamp with light and used a bright flash light. The first letter is hard to read.
He is going to be evaluated by the local Schutzhund trainer next week. He is high drive, knows sit, down, heel, stay, no, out, crate, and fetch all in German. He probably knows more, but I don’t. Thus the evaluation. He was found running loose in Berkeley. The shelter had a cyst removed from his shoulder, see the giant shaved spot. He is fine with other dogs except the other dog from the shelter where he came from. He likes bones and balls and the retriever dummy. He is waiting for me to say his name, and I don’t know who he is. Please post him everywhere to see if someone recognizes him or his breeding. Thank you so much for your help. If someone is interested in adopting him have them contact me. I will not place him until after his evaluation so he can be safe. So far his name is Timber, he does not respond to it at all. Name ideas are appreciated as well.

Check for a Microchip also. Or was that done?

The tatoo should be linked in some way to his pedigree, especially if he earned any titles. Contact the AKC or SV, there is a good chance he is on file somewhere.

Yes we are doing that as well, the tatoo is not an SV tatoo, and of coure the shelter checked for chip, no chip!

has anyone checked with the local vets or newspapers to see if a dog meeting this discription has been reported stolen or missing?

Here's a couple of other places that may have the tattoo registered:
Tatoo-A-Pet
6571 S.W. 20th Ct. Ft. Lauderdale FL 33317
Telephone: (954) 581-5834 or (800) TATTOOS (828-8667)
Fax: (954) 581-0056
NDR (National Dog Registry)
POB 51105
Mesa, AZ 85208
800-NDR-DOGS
I'd also check with www.gsdca-wda.org Since they are now requiring tattoos to compete, they might have a record.

Just becasue the chip does not show up does not mean there is no chip. I had a friend bring a chip (with permission) from the EU and my vet implanted it as the puppy will need it to be shipped to the EU. My Vet checked with both of his scanners and the chip does NOT read at all on our scanners. If it were not for him having just done the implant, we would not know the EU chip was there. I don't know how you can get a reader for an EU chip, but if the dogs looks to be under about 3 years old it was likely chipped if from over there.
Most tattoos I have seen from Europe are 2 letters and then 4 numbers. SchH USA tattoos are 7 digits, so it is not a SchH USA tattoo. I agree with Neohaus. Email Sabine at the SV inGermany. She handles the transfer paeprs for German dogs coming to the USA. You can email her (in English) at akc@schaeferhunde.de.

Good news is that the original owner of this dog was found in the south somewhere, he is an 11 year old SchH3 dog. The original owner said she sold him to someone and last she heard he was just a backyard dog, but had no contact info. So the lady who rescued him is going to keep him and let him live out his last couple of years with her! Happy ending for an old fellow!!
She may even take him to a SchH club for a bite or two now and then!

Thanks so much for the update. I'm glad he's "found" a home.
