You can use whatever you like. Registered kennels are given kennel registration codes. I would told by someone at USA that I could use whatever I wanted to use. If I want to register my dog, I submit my code to USA.

If I were you I would just find someone that is registered with USA to do the tattoo. When that person does the tattoo, the tattoo has numbers that are registered directly too that tattooer. Just another added precaution in case your dog is lost. Many times you find dogs in rescues that have tattoos but the owners never included the onfo with their AKC paperwork so the AKC can be of no direct help. On the other hand if the tattoo was done by a registered tattooer they can used the info. to tell you exactly who did it and you can get the info. So if your dog is lost and the tattoo is called in they know who to go to for info. They will call this person and then they can check their records and find your info.

Ramgsd,
There is only one problem with your suggestion. Every USA tatooer has his/her own code. If the dog was out of a registered kennel, it could be traced back to the breeder. If USA issued the number, the dog (individual registration) could be traced back to the owner. Having a USA registered tatooer tattoo the dog. Does not automatically guarantee the dog will be registered. They could use their own tattoo and register it with USA or the organization of there choosing. I would also microchip the dog to stack the deck in my favor.

We used the first two letters of our kennel name "WA" followed by year "7" followed by litter designation "A1", "A2", "A3". etc. One completed tatto read "WA7A2" one was WA7A4, etc. These can be noted on the AKC registration if desired. We also microchipped and had those recorded through Avid prior to the pups leaving.

Animules, that's exactly what we did, as well. KB= kalibeck, 08 for the year, A1, A2, etc, registered with Avid on the microchip registration, & with the AKC registration also. Hope it never needs to be tested! jackie harris
