Can anyone recommend an airline? Looking to ship an adult female from ORD or Midway to I believe Pennsylvania. Not a long flight. What airlines have reasonable rates and who have you had good experience with? I've never shipped a dog, rather nervous about it. Thanks!

Delta is the only one I use

Since we are near the summer months, watch out for heat embargos.  Airlines won't ship dogs if temp is 85F or higher, so try to book redeye or dawn flights  - except Continental I think has different rules.   If the dog will be traveling in a 500 crate or bigger, you need to make sure the flight is on a 700 series plane or  an airbus.  I have flown my dog with Delta, Frontier, and United without major incident.  My dog travels with me as excess baggage,  but for dogs flying solo I like  Delta Air Freight and I have heard great things about Continental, but the cost with Continental has always been prohibitive for me.

The night before the flight fill the  little water cups that attach to the crate door with water and freeze it.  This way, the water won't spill and the dog will have a water source if need be.  Ziptie the crate all around, including the door, so it can't be opened accidently.  Sometimes they want you to remove the dog from the crate so they can physically inspect inside the crate, so usually the last thing I do before handing over the dog in the crate is ziptie the door shut so it can't be easily opened.

I really like the way Continental treated me and my dogs.  They do have air conditioned facilites and will take animals year round.

I use Delta most all the time and have had great results. I know many people who use Continental and have had good luck with them.. Delta's prices have went up some, but are still in the same ball park as most other airlines. I've used Northwestern a few times also, prices are good and dogs arrived safely.

I used to live in Baton Rouge, LA, and in that suffocating climate the only carrier of choice was Continental because - at the time - they were the only ones with climate control conditions.

I do not know if any other airlines have followed suit.  With the weather turning warm you can expect to have more shipping restrictions on live animals with any airline.  Even with Continental you'll need to book a spot well in advance as they have limits on how many dogs they can take on any given flight.

Yes, and I can attest that Yvette's dog arrived safely in CT!!!!! I have used Continental, US Air, North West, and Delta. ALL of the dogs arrived either here or in their destinations without a problem. Continental is the best to use in extreme weather (either too hot or too cold) as they dog have special holds which are climate controlled.
