Those of you who have been breeding dogs for years a probably going to laugh at this...
Do males shed less than females?
Ranger, the guy in my avatar is my first male GSD. All my females have shed bagfulls of hair, especially in the spring. Years ago, I heard that the reason Lassie was a male was because they have better coats, and don't shed as much hair during the twice-yearly shed as the females do. Star is just finishing her shed right now, and she looks pretty naked, so I can see their point, if this is true.
So, IS this true, or did I just get lucky with Ranger's coat type? He's got an awesome coat: thick and shiny and gorgeous to touch. I was brushing him this evening, and got only a small amount of hair from his flanks and 'trousers' area, while with Star I half-fill the wastebasket, then have to vacuum the furballs up off the floor and hallway. (Her fur is much lighter in colour than his, so it's easy to tell who it belongs to.)

Ooops! I forgot, I changed my avatar the other night. That's Tasha in the photo, not Ranger! And she was a world-champion shedder, especially in the last few years of her life, when she developed 'old dog' coat! She seemed to shed nonstop, too - notice the date on the photo!

In my experience, all GSD's shed 24/7/30/365 after they are neutered . German Shedders............

Lassie was a male because females blow their coat right before a heat. So yes they shed more often.

My male Galan is shedding an entire new dog every week. I'll probably have to apply for a kennel license LOL I just brush him (and brush him, and brush him etc) I end up with the ball of fur like the one in your picture :)
I know that you can find vitamin supplements that are supposed to help with shedding but I cannot attest to how well they work Or Don't!) as I've never used them.
