I've searched the messageboard for info on mosquito repellent that's safe for use on dogs. Advantix and Biospot have been discussed particularly in reference to ticks and Lyme disease.  Here in rural Ontario the mosquitoes are thick this spring and I'd like to find something safe to use on our GSD that would repel them.  Of course the concern with mosquitoes here, in additon to the bug bites, is the danger of West Nile disease.  He's already on Advantage Multi for heartworm prevention, but I'd like to find something that would repel the little critters so they won't bite him.  Any recommendations?

I use Ultra shield to spray on my dog's, and yes it is a chemical. It is water proof and last up to 3 day's so on the 4th day I spray them again. It is in feed stores or TSC in the horse section but is also used on dog's too.  I also use nematodes for the ticks, I think it can be used on mosquito larvae too but not sure. Just google nematodes and the website will pop up. That is all natural.

I use 8oz permethrin10% to 20 oz baby oil.  Shake it up and apply. This works better than anything. I know its safe, as I use it as a lotion on myself when Im out with the animals all day. You can find it at most any feed & Tack and Livestock Stores. An 8oz container, runs about $8.

Rio Vista Coat so Soft. I LOVE it, also repels ticks, fleas, flies, etc. All natural, smells nice, and makes their coats shiny. It's a dog safe horse product.

I don't use any chemicals on my dogs at all. I live in a high tick, mosquito area, and am able to control exposure through natural means. At your local natural food store, you will find Black Walnut Hull capsules. That is what I use. Not only do I use it on the dogs, we use it as well for us.  I take two a day, and each dog gets one. In the two years I have used this, I have not had a tick on me and neither have my dogs. My club training field has lots of ticks, as do the woods I hike my dogs in. I have not been bitten by a skeeter in two years either. My dogs are tested twice a year for heart worm and all come up negative.  You cannot smell the walnut through your pores either like you can with garlic or shark cartilidge capsules.

Another idea I have heard, but have not yet tried, but I will this weekend, is putting Listerine ORIGINAL in a spray bottle and spraying the dogs down. I have heard it also works well to spray the area around a patio and it keeps the bugs away.

My grandparents lived in the heart of the NH woods and had cedar trees. They always said cedar trees keep the bugs away. I have used cedar oil on my own skin and on the ears of the dogs when we camp, and it has kept the bugs away. It is hard to find though.
