An article | came across in the CKC magazine 'Dogs in Canada' raised an interesting topic.  Is colour linked to behaviour in anyway?  The article refers to things like Chocolate Labs being more active than the yellow or black ones, orange and white cats being typically laid back and black and tan dogs (no specific reference was made to GSD) being inclined to guard resources.

I did owned a black and tan who enjoyed collecting all the available toys a food/water bowl and tempting the animals in the house to get them.  Coincidence?

What say you?  Have you noticed and behaviour traits that seems to be linked to colour?

I have no clue with dogs. But I did notice when with full sun... and plowing fields I tend to be a bit frisky at night. I think it's the tan.

Gosh I hope my government doesn't decide to charge for the sun. Ruin my summer nights. Blaaaaaaaaaaaa

Wonder if their scientists come from the same place as their breeders?

Well...I am a petsitter and I must chuckle because ALL the chocolate labs we take care of are "active". As in, crazy active :)

That's funny you should mention labs,

I've been breeding labs off & on for years,

I have only been breeding yellow to yellow for 4 generations.

I used to have all 3 colors, and I noticed that:

Yellows are mellow

Blacks are very active

Chocolates are not the sharpest tool in the shed!

So I have been breeding so I have complete yellows, yellow to yellow,
I like mellow!

Although recently I have bred my girl with a black, to improve the dark points!

blondes have more fun

red in the head, fire in the bed

seems to me this could be a "show vs. work" thread in disguese.   most working dogs tend to be sable, bicolor, black, and show lines are more the blk/tan  'saddleback" look.

so yes, i have seen a general link between color and behaviour.

and before someone has to remind me for the ump-teen-thousandant time,  there are show dogs that work and working dogs that show.

you dont see very many sables getting a VA rating, just as you dont see many blk/tan saddlebacks on the podium at national events.

Capt'n Mike, that wouldn't be the famous London in the video clip in that last post, would it?

I saw Chuck do a demo with his dogs back in the 70's. They were really unbelievable! I also know some people who knew him quite well, and had him give training seminars. There were no tricks or gimmicks involved: just living with  your dog 24/7 and educating it, rather than training it.

That's no timberwolf, Mike. I'll bet it's a Siberian Husky or malamute. Wolves don't have masks like that.

Eisenman claimed the Hobo dogs were purebred GSD's but I'd often look at their faces and wonder. He never revealed their pedigrees.
