An interesting tidbit I'd like to share which I hope to be useful to some... I was surprised to learn this evening how much stronger a stainless steel leash clip is than the standard brass or bronze clips that come with most leashes/long lines.

A few weeks ago my hubby's Mali bent the hook on a bronze clasp on a long line during some back-tie rag work, and I was surprised to see it give like that.  At the local hardware store I was about to buy a replacement bronze clip when hubby suggested stainless steel.  The cost was more, $6 vs $2, but when I saw the difference in load rating I didn't think twice.  Even the small SS clips were rated to 170 lbs force vs only 70 lbs for a comparable bronze or zinc-plated steel clip.

Maybe I'm the only one ignorant on this matter but I didn't think upgrading to SS would make that big a difference in strength and I consider a few extra bucks a wise investment and I bought several to upgrade my gear.  Just thought I'd pass on the word...

Does anybody sell leashes or long lines with stainless steel clips?

I imagine the individual quality of the clip construction comes into play as well. All my leashes have what I believe are brass clips and I have never had one bend or break. Good to know though, I'll try a SS sometime. I bought a SS prong collar years ago for over double what I normally pay I was and really unimpressed.

Like everything, it's the quality of that particular snap. NO Mali should be able to bend a brass snap. Just not enough power there. That is if the snap wasn't defectiveor under sized to begin with. Poor quality metal won't hold up very well. Not all brass is the same. Stainless steal is the strongest snap you are going to get. If it eases your mind then it's a great way to go for peace of mind.

Tip:  Stainless snaps and fasteners of all types, including swivel clips can be found at marine supplies.  I got a few good pieces there.

I have used the same bronze clip's since 1991, they are made in Italy. Strong stuff. They cost almost US$5 each back then. Don't know the current price, haven't needed it:-)
