Does anybody here use Calsorb when your bitch is welping pups? What dosage do you use? Are their any bad side effects?
My vet tech friend tells me it works better than Oxytosin and is more safe to use. Any feed back would be appreciated.

I dont understand your vets reasoning...Calsorb is given as a supplement for severe calcium defeciency and if a female has that problem , should have been found before she was bred and given natural calcium...The use of chemical calciums can cause the calcium to form stones in the kidneys and on a whelping bitch, can cause Milk fever..Too much calcium given at this time of birth , can result in major problems..I have never in all my 25 years of breeding given calsorb or any calcium supplements like that...it is for severe defeciency.
Oxitocin is a hormone stored in the petuitary gland and if given as an injection by a vet, it is to stimulate the birth contractions and can help clean out the canal and help stop excessive bleeding....It has nothing to do with calcium defeciency...
I use oxitocin after all births...have all my life and every female gets her dose at least by 5 hours after the last pup born...sometime a dose is given if vet thinks a pup is stuck or not all have been delivered...after waiting a safe time....too long in the canal is dangerous....
I keep Oxytocin on hand in my refrigerator for any birth.
I feed natural sources of calcium long before and during the pregnancy and after the whelp...but it is natural foods with calcium.
