Someone on one of my training lists has asked about undershot jaw in a 6 week old GSD puppy.  I have never seen or heard of a GSD with undershot jaw and since the lower jaw tends to continue growing after the top jaw has stopped, I would think this pup will get worse rather than better.  Anyone had any personal experience of this?  Any chance the mouth will come right and how much is it likely to affect the pup as an adult?  The mouth is definitely undershot, pup is definitely purebred, the rest of the litter have normal mouths and the sire is all Czech breeding.  Don't know the mothers pedigree, but she is apparently working lines.

If the gap between the upper and lower teeth at the front of the mouth is larger than the thickness of a fingernail, my experience is that it will not correct itself.  And from what I have seen, the undershot jaw is more likely to correct itself than the overshot jaw.

I'd never count on an undershot bite correcting itself. Very few do.  My experience has been the opposite from Andrea's. I've had puppies that were slightly overshot end up with scissors bites. In fact, I'd rather have a young puppy with a slight overbite than a scissors bite. It's the levels and undershots that concern me the most. No reason that this puppy can't make someone a very nice pet.
