I just got back from my cousins house. He lived in Spain for over 20 years. He feeds his Spanish mastiff rice and beans of a leg quarter with potatoes. Pasta at times. and always a vet tab lol. his dogs are6 and 7 years old and look great. He told me in Spain dogs eat what the family eats, They are also very attached to their four legged friends.

My best friend got a boxer/GSD mix from the pound for her daughter. When he was a year old, they noticed his coat looked funny. The old coat that was shedding out was harsh, dry and brittle. When he went to the vets for his annual shots, the vet said it was probably nutrition related, and to stop feeding him that crap from the grocery store.
My friend's husband is an well-educated man, but he comes from Sardinia (small island that is part of Italy.) and is very old fashioned in some of his views. Of course, when he was growing up, there was no such thing as dog food.
Now the dog eats people food, and his coat is slick and shiny. He is somewhat overweight though, but that's probably because of those big, brown boxer eyes, which he uses to beg for food! Also, their yard isn't fenced, due to ongoing renovations, so the poor dog never gets a run off the leash.

JMHO, but beans, potatoes and pasta have no place in a dog's diet. i would be seriously worried about bloat, torsion and pancreatic problems. once again JMHO, but i think you'd be asking for trouble feeding that stuff.

sun the two dogs look great. so i can understand your best friend. I fed dogs people food too, but got in trouble with a breeding female that didnt have enough calcium. she is ok. so i make sure they all get a supplement now.

I just wanted to clarify I'm not saying I agree with what my friend is doing. The fact the dog's coat looks better shows you just what garbage must be in some of the cheaper pet foods.

The rice is ok but the beans have good also, it just missing the other proper ingredients like organ meats and bone....if they are giving it a lamb leg or meat and bone ok....didnt quite understand if they were or were not...
they better throw fish in there or the omegas are gonna hit that dog badly in a few years....
I heard their is a Great Dane breeder in the usa that feeds rice only 365 days a year....dont know if she supplements...but i only heard this.....so unless someone know where and who dont call it gospel..
