Rice, Oats, Barley and Beet Pulp are among the first ingredients listed for their formulas 2 & 3. If I fed kibble I would feed something along the lines of EVO.

Stick with your Canidae. It's good stuff. If you want to go grain free like Evo, Orijen is excellent also, just bear in mind those kinds of food are very high in protein.

we tried canidae and gave it a fair trial. at first the dogs seemed to like it and they did pretty well, but like most other commercial feeds, after time, you realize that they are lacking something and the dogs lose condition. the last bag of canidae that i bought smelled just horrible - like rotten flesh/roadkill. i won't buy it again.
right now our dogs are eating hamburger, steamrolled oats, eggs, yogurt with missing link. it looks like uncooked meatloaf.

Good Grief PJP!
Where did you buy that horrible bag of Canidae? We have fed all of our dogs Canidae All Life Stages for years and no problems at all.
Coats are always good and weight too. They only eat about 2 1/2 cups of it a day and hold weight well. You should have taken that bag back and not expect that all bags of Canidae are that gross.

Weird, when I looked up places around here that sell it, 2 hardwear stores are all that popped up. Why no feed or pet stores, but places that sell lumber? I looks like an OK food but what are the costs per bag? I wouldn' pay a premium price tag for it but might give it a go if it was cheap enough.

arrakis, i bought that horrible bag of canidae at a feed store. it smelled so bad after i opened it that i just threw it out. and made a mental note not to buy that product again or do business with that store. i am so tired of trying different so-called premium dog food only to find them a disappointment. most recent kibble purchased was healthwise. i had to order it online and have it shipped. dogs did well on it to start with, but the last few bags i bought caused serious diarrhea. i tried reducing the amount , but it made no difference. so, i went back to making their food again. the diarrhea has stopped. i have become very disappointed in commercial kibble as a whole. as i said before, it seems like they do well on it for a while, but the good results never last long and then i am on the quest again.....looking for something healthy that they can tolerate. they do seem to get along best with the stuff i prepare myself. (really time consuming, tho)

The native food looks interesting, but not enough meat sources for me. I'm not a fan of beet pulp either. I found a local hardware store that can have the food shipped to them. They were not aware of this until I mentioned, it was on their national website. 30 dollars US for a 40lbs. bag is not a bad deal. I was feeding Canidae for almost 4 years. The last 18 months of feeding canidae I noticed my dogs coats becoming dull, dry noses and more dander than ever before. We were having trouble keeping weight on a few of the dogs. All GSDs. Feeding up to 6 cups a day is a little crazy. I switched to EVO RF formula and had great results. It was becoming cost prohibitive to feed the Evo RF ( $45 for a 29lbs bag). We are now feeding "chicken soup for dog lovers" and the dogs are doing really well on it. No finicky eaters allowed at my house including children with 2 and 4 leggs. Their coats have come back and the dander has cut back down. I'm dissappointed in Canidae. They changed something. I was loyal for a long time.
