So today I was doing some basic training with my boy.
We were doing a heel at a jogging pace, he is not so good at this but its something we are working on.
Here we are jogging by the fence line of the HUGE run (a bit smaller then a football field) when my boy spots a cat running near by. I of course, was oblivious to the cat. I had no idea he was there. My boy burst into a full out run towards the cat, catching me totally off gaurd. I wiped out and skitted along the side of the fence, still holding onto the leash. I was pulled a bit when my toe got caught on the fence post. My big toenail was ripped off completely.
Had I been wearing better shoes, this would have been avoided.
Anyways, I hobbled back to the house after putting him in the crate. Blood was EVERYWHERE. My toe is still bleeding and WOW does it ever hurt. What really grinds my gears is it is such a beautiful day. I was really looking forward to training and then taking my 2 GSD's for a swim. Now Im stuck inside the house until the bleeding stops and the pain goes away.
Im a way Im sort of proud, this is my first training injury, although it would have been completely avoidable if I was paying attention! Argh...the trails and tribulations of a novice! I know better for next time. Instead of admiring my dog, I will keep my eyes OPEN.
Care to share some of your training injury stories?
I thought this might be a fun thread!

Ouch' thats painfull
The one time i got caught out was during the Winter evening training with the lights on
I had young Fred on a line and he had just gone over the one meter jump backwards then over again
I was standing in front of it with the dog sitting next to me talking to Rinus Bastiaasen the Belgium team Scutzhund Captain when Fred decided to jump again without warning
Caught off guard i hit the jump which Fred has just cleared and at the point of my nether regions plus cracking my knee as i took off over the jump after Fred
Laying in a heap the opposite side of the Jump Holding my Privates and trying to hold my knee at the same time
Rinus comes around the Jump and he said to me. 'Let go of the line the next time'
Not much i could say to him at the time for his kind remarks

The irony.
I was out today jogging with my GSD and a foster GSD. We're doing a hike/bike trail at a local park. Jogging along and the foster decides to take a right turn right in front of me as I'm acknowleging another dog owner. My right foot lands on her paw - twisting my ankle. I go down hard and have a nice road rash on my left arm.
I limp to my car, get the dogs loaded in and drive home. Now it's time for ice and some quiet time.
Good luck with the toenail.

I feel your pain. I was ring training with my first real "show dog" years ago and as she was gaiting (quite nicely for once) I walked clean into the wooden base of a blind. Blood was running down my leg and starting to seep through my jeans, but by god, she looked good and I wasn't stopping! I still have a scar on my shin.
I also have a scar on the inside of my elbow, I was training my male on a high balance beam, and when he reached the end platform, he leaped off, I caught him, and the leash clip cut open my inner elbow.

I was using a fishing line to train for off leash OB, He took off and I got caught in it. The line sliced the back of my knee. I can still feel it on wet days or if my leg gets tired, 20 years later.

Well here's one of my funny ones, though I'll warn the reader these are "off-field injuries"...
A few years back I made the mistake of buying a high rent import sight unseen and let's just say the dog had "issues". After a month with the dog I finally decided to return him for his fearful behavior and here's the icing on the cake...
Being that it was summer, I went for a long walk at night with the dog. As I started down my long driveway I stumbled on a piece of tree branch that I didn't see in the dark, and I pitched forward. The dog bolted in fear and pulled me over and I threw out my hands to break my fall. My watch strap dug into my wrist and peeled back the top layers of skin.
However, at the time I didn't even notice I was bleeding because as I lay on the ground I was transfixed by the sight of the poor doggie. He had bolted all the way to the end of my long driveway, with the flexi lead clattering behind him. Now he was running in circles, the 70 lb GSD desparately trying to out-run the 7 oz flexi clattering behind him on the concrete. I picked up myself, brushed the twigs off, and the dog was still running in circles glancing back again and again at the evil flexi still chasing him.
I think the next day the dog was back on the plane. The purchase was an expensive mistake and I've got a scar on my left wrist to always remind me of the experience. I laugh about it now with my dog friends, just thinking of the sight of the whole pathetic episode... "the chase of the evil flexi"... LOL
Unfortunately although I've got a better dog now, my balance has not improved, and this winter while walking my dog I slipped on some black ice and went sprawling yet again. This time, the young pup stopped, turned, and cocked his head with a look that said, "You clutz."

1doggie2, I've got to ask... how were you using fishing line to train OB? That's a new one for me.

off field schutzhund injury here too. took my older female and my mixed breed out of the car for a walk. last time i ever tried to walk two dogs at the same time without prong collars. they pulled to go see another dog, i went down hard on the stones onto both knees and was dragged a couple of feet. my knees still hurt from it i swear. both were skinned very badly. i should have just let the darn leashes go!

Evadic I had a very similar injury but it was horse related. She spooked when a garbage can tipped over in the wind and jumped and twisted on my foot. It tore off 3 of my toenails and shattered alot of little bones in my foot. I was wearing high english riding boots and it took awhile to cut that off while the blood was shooting out the top of the boot. I was fine but my mom passed out a couple of times:) Especially when the nurses had to sit on me to give me injections in my toes to numb them. That hurt worse than the damn injury itself.
