Has anyone gone from schutzhund to ringsport? - Page 1

If so, I am just wondering which you prefer? Would it be hard for the dog to go from SchH to RS? Can you still play around in ringsport if your dog cannot do all the exercises (ie: the wall!)?

Ok, I got sucked into another post. I do Sch and French Ring (and Mondio) I crossed over a sch 3 dog to Brevet for French Ring. BUT......he could not go further. If you want to do French Ring......the dog should be trained to bite with certain technique. It is imperitive that the dog has proper technique or will not  pass French Ring 1. A dog with a Sch background can cross over easier to Mondioring. With that said, I have a dog for French Ring...and a different dog for SCh. To make top level at either....you can not cross over and mix and match.....for top level anyway. D

As a person who does both sports, Dave, which do you feel is a better test for the dog as far as testing temperament, drives and nerves goes? Or do they both test the dog, just in different ways? I am drawn to ringsport because there is no tracking element (yes, I dislike tracking!) but am not in a position at this time to get another dog that will excel in ringsport. I just wondered if I could go out and still learn new things while having fun with my dog.

My male has been trained in sch since birth, but we have only got our BH and AD so far. I am still unsure at this point, but I think we may switch over to French (or Mondio) Ring. IMO, if you have a great dog that can do it, go for it. I think I would rather breed to an FR 3 male than a SCH 3 male. It takes real guts for a shepherd to do that, and do it well.

Everyone asks me the same thing. My opinion is French Ring is harder then Mondio Ring...better test for dogs hardness. Mondio tests training. Between Sch and French Ring.......man I dig them both. BUT...completely different "games".  I will say this though...in French Ring...the decoy can take many liberties....especially with esquives. I trial and train alot in Mexico....its even tougher on the dog there then US...and the decoys are brutal and fast...so your dog NEEDS to be tough and HAVE TONS OF TECHNIQUE.  But SChutzhund is also very hard...different objective though...and I love tracking! FYI...........it is a Malinois sport. Although GSDs do it...it is desighned for a Mali.....which me saying this will start a bunch of arguing on this post. My Sch dog is a GSD...my ring dog is a Mali. For me I only train/compete at top level.  And to make top level Ring...you need a mali.   For those that want to argue this....first meet me on the podium in both sports and we can talk. D
