Has anyone heard of a yearly heartworm shot ??? Any information you might have is greatly appreciated.

I was recently given information from a rescue that stated they administered a shot that was a preventative for a year.

Thank you!

There use to be a 6 month injectable preventative but it was pulled from the market after many dogs had reactions to it. Once it was in the system it was there for 6 months, no way to remove it from the system if the dog had a reaction.

That must be a new one on the market.  Probably another one made by Fort Dodge.  As Wufpack said, proheart, the one that was every 6 months, dogs had many reactions.  Once it was in their system, it was "stuck" there.

I have worked at a Vet for 12 years, never heard of a Heartworm Injection good for 1 year. As the others said, Ft Dodge had "Proheart" on the market several years ago but after enough complaints they FINALLY pulled it from the market.

Are you sure they didn't HW test the dog and say he is all set until next year (he would still need pills)?

Give them a call cause if they are telling people that and they are wrong, there could be a lot of animals at risk by oblivious owners.

I am most positive that I was told a yearly heartworm vaccine as prevention. I questioned this as well. I manage the local shelter/pound, and neither of my techs had heard of this vaccine, other than the 6 month one.

Thanks for the ideas though. I will continue to look into this.

I believe Proheart is labeled for 12 months and is still used in other countries such as Australia. In the states it was called Proheart 6.

It may be available to purchase online as many Aussie drugs can be ordered.

I never trust anything new, I like the test of time.
