I have noticed a lot of people offering garlic to their dogs for flea and tick control. THIS CAN BE A PROBLEM!!! Some dogs react to garlic and it can cause immune mediated hemolytic anemia, this can cause death, at its worst, and at its least very expensive vet bills. Not all dogs are affected but is that a chance you wnat to take? Same goes for onions... can be very very bad! Hemolytic anemia is where in short the blood destroys itself leading to anemia.

That's interesting! I did not know that. Years ago, I used to give garlic to my Australian Shepherds. I never started that pratice up with the German Shepherds.
May I ask, how long does it take for them to become ill? Is it something that will happen quickly, or could it takes months, years?

Do you have facts to support this statement?

Well I have been using brewer's yeast and garlic pills for years and I think as long as they are on the market I will continue to. Or if I am faced with facts. Also I have heard the deal about onions..........I don't reccomend giving them whole onions but a bit here and there in stews etc is not going to hurt them. Again I have done this for years and years and never had a problem.

I have worked at a vets for years, we have seen about 8 cases, i have noticed that 5 of the 8 were cocker spaniels but I don't want to place it just on the breed itself. Again if you read my statement it did say not all dogs have this problem it is a pattern i have seen, and a chance i won't take especially when there are safe alternatives on the market.

Garlic (diallyl thiosulfinate - the active compound) has the potential to oxidize erythrocyte membranes and hemoglobin. This can induce hemolysis associated with the appearance of eccentrocytes in dogs. Garlic and foods containing garlic should not be fed to dogs. Eccentrocytosis appears to be a major diagnostic feature of garlic-induced hemolysis in dogs. Not all dogs who get garlic become ill, but if they do, the nature of this oxidation can be very severe and lead to death. There are bona fide reports of garlic toxicity in dogs. Make your own choice but at least know what can happen.

I think that garlic is OK. Water can kill you as well (Google: water intoxication), but we don't stop drinking water.
