I have a sable dog that is dominant for producing only sables. I know there is another word--homogonous--but I am not spelling it right. I went to the von Arlett website and read the article, "Sables A Museum Piece" in which he states he has never seen a dog dominant for only sables; the jist of it is it leads me to believe it is very rare. I just wanted to get some feedback here. Is it rare? And if so why? Thanks in advance.

sables aren't rare a bit in working lines, as a matter of fact, that's a dominant color in GSD.
the word is spelled "homogenous" (i think....!) you might want to go to ehret's website--daryl has some great articles on GSD and color inheritance, and if they're not up there, email him. it's one of his "hobbies"....:)
'course, in showline dogs, what they call a sable,
i personally call a really washed-out B/T...JMO

Homozygous.
It just means that the dog (or bitch) carries 2 genes for sable and since sable is dominant, every puppy born of that parent will get a sable gene and thus be sable.

The word is that Ellute von der Mohnwiese is homozygous for sable, at least that is what I heard in Germany a few weeks ago when we had this discussion over dinner. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/123867.html

What it also means that is cool is that if bred to solid black, every puppy will be Black Sable. Sable with recessive black.
Maternal genotype specified: aa
Maternal phenotype: Black
Paternal genotype specified: awaw
Paternal phenotype: Red Agouti (black nosed)
1 potential genotypes:
100.00% aaw Hd=17.0 Edyfair Plxno - Red Agouti (black nosed) carrying recessive black

Zidane Haus Sevens is also homozygous sable - he only produces sables - also the late Acky v Neuen Land - and there are others. Not so unusual. Every dog carries two color genes - sable is dominant - the homozygous sables simply carry two sable genes - possible whenever two sables are bred together to have some puppies that inherit the sable gene from each parent and are therefore homozygous sable. Black dogs would be homozygous black because they carry two black color genes only - except they can produce other colors because black is recessive not dominant.

Thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge with me. Genetics is something I am trying to learn more about and sometimes it makes me feel so dumb...............But at least I have a better understanding now. Also glad to know my dog is just fairly normal and doesn't carry some rare gene. It limits the people that would want to breed to him but that is OK as I am pretty damn picky anyway. Thanks again.
