how can elbow callouses be avoided in the first place and what is the best treatment for them??

Keep the dog off cement as much as possible. I have had great luck using emu oil on the callouses!
If the dogs must stay on cement, put a piece of plywood (if he's not a chewer) in his kennel for him to lay on.

ANIMAL USE
Emu Oil is also effective in the treatment of animals. Skin conditions on animals may be treated the same as humans. Use for muscle soreness in racing or show dogs, cats and horses.
