What's a typical size for a GSD whelping box? I may be doing some serious renovations on my house in the near future, and was wondering if there would be space for one in my smallest bedroom, if there are 2 dog crates in there as well.

my last whelping box was 42" x 48", and the size was fine even with a big litter.  my new durawhelp box is 48" square.

I personally like at least 5ft X 5ft. It just gives them more room and the bitch does not have to lay diagonally to stretch out.

I have a 4x4' for a smaller bitch or litter

I have a 4x5' for my larger females or litters

I agree, I love to get right in there and cuddle every chance I get or when mama dog is willing to go shake out her limbs a little.

I think a 5x5' is too much though, young pups can wonder and get chilled in a box this size the first week, my thoughts anyway.

I love the 5' x 5'    never had any pups get cold or have any problem  , as I have built in lamps above...One lamp is  250 watt heat lamp and in the other I use just a 100 watt. and can switch off or on either or.....and room for me too.....lol    screen on a portion for circulation and door with latch to assure no one gets out or in without my knowledge...floors are cleanable rubber maid squares professional by  Sherwin Williams...and allow pups to not slip as they learn to walk., and can be cleaned very swifly and safely..

My son makes  my whelping boxes for  me and am I blessed for that.

The kiddie swimming pools make a nice whelping box as well.....it's also easy to wipe clean. Wrapping a Ex pen around it keeps others out.

A kiddy pool for my bitch, who has destroyed every dog toy I've bought for her so far, and likes to chew on the ornamental wire fence around my rose garden for recreation?

Hmmm....don't think so!
