If you are looking for a well tempered working prospect, would you prefer a Czech or Eastern German bred GSD? I understand that Czech came from DDRs, however, I still suspect that by this time, they might have some differences. So, which do you prefer?

If this is a stupid question, sorry ... but don't forget to explain why so that I might better understand for future reference, LOL!

DDR dogs may take longer to mature.

I personally own a 50% DDR and 50% czech bred girl.  granddaughter to the great Norbo Ben Ju.  I can tell you that she is a very calm, very focused puppy.  good prey drive, not over the top though.  She has strong food drive  and outstanding tracking abilities.   very confident,  will lay at my feet while I do target practice with a .22 rifle.  no nerve issue's.

if you can't tell,  I am very pleased with my puppy.

I personally own 2 dogs with DDR/CZ breeding. I have had the male for 8 months and he is more than I had hoped for.His link is below for those interested. He goes to school with me on the bus and trolley, has a Herding Capabilities Test done (at 10 months) and is far more progressed in all three phases of Sch than any dogs I have had at this age.

I got a female today that is overly dominant toward other females, but tolerates males except when around her toys.  The genetics are there, she needs to be handled and needs more direction.  She allowed me to thouroughly handle her (check teeth, feel over her body, and to take her from the run without owner present without problem)  Will assess her more completely as time progresses. Her link is below.

I have developed a taste for the strong working abilities that are encompassed in the DDR/CZ bloodlines.

I do agree that maturation seems to be slow in my male, but his desire and inate abilities are there.  In herding, he had never seen sheep only goats twice and was very biddible and interested in the pens.  Once DDR/CZ I'll never go back to other lines.

Have a great evening.    Don D.

I use to have a preference mostly for the ddr/czech dogs.  However now I like just all working lines in general........I think more and more good dogs are being found now a days with a mix of czech/ddr/and w. german blood.  My younger pup is a blend of czech/ddr/w.german and she is every bit excellent for what I want.

I like the West German and Belgian/Dutch lines myself for the overall working drive and desire to work. The DDR lines are gorgeous, for sure and have made some really nice contributions to the working lines.

I have a DDR female and also a Czech female.

I like the Czech dogs a little better. They seem to mature faster and are easier to work. My Czech female, Xena, has over the top prey drive and is sooooooo fun to work. She is very willing to please. She is a little handler soft but wont take NO crap from anyone else. She has a fair amount of defense in her too. I am going to get her SchH3 and then maybe do some PSA with her. I have noticed that the Czech dogs do mature alot faster.

Here is her pedigree for you all to see.... also her sire placed 3rd at the AWDF Championships this last weekend.

Brix, who is my DDR female is very slow maturing. She is a little shy with people but seems to be working through it.  She has ALOT of prey drive and loves to play ball, tug and is a very good tracker. I can say that the DDR line dogs are VERY slow maturing.  I love the nice blocky look of the DDR dogs. I also love the dark pigmentation that they have too.

Here is Brix....

I'm pretty selective of particular lines from each, and intend to breed from all three.  I prefer the DDR blood pre-established through Czech lines, three or four generations back.  And westline generally half or less.

In my almost 20 years being owned by GSD's, I've had everything from Showlines (when I first started) to full DDR, Czech, and now a combo of both with some WG working lines.

Although I loved my showlines girl, I can really see the difference in the lines.  Especiatlly when it came to drives.  My DDR male was slow to mature, but was also very laid back, easy to train, very loving and protective of his people.  Was just as happy laying at my feet as he was out working.  My daughters Czech female was the absolute best (sorry Haze and Onyx) dog I have every had the pleasure of being owned by.  By 8-9 mo old, she was doing everything that a SD dog is suppose to do.  Extremely easy to train, drives off the chart.  Even at such a young age, when she had her SD vest on, she was like a 10 yr old dog, but when it came off, and she knew it was "easy" time, her drives were off the charts.  I am very fortunate to own a daughter from the two, so she is DDR/Czech lines....and I must say that I have truly gotten the best of both worlds.  Brijett's drives are off the charts.  If she can't find a ball in the yard, she will pick up anything (normally a 2x4x10) to carry around the yard.  Hits the sleeve with a full mouth grip, very clear and level headed, very alert and attentive in her OB, nose deep to the ground in tracking, and sometimes I feel if I don't stop her, she would drop dead before she stopped working! :)  However, at the same time.....she is very loving and gentle with us and especailly young children.   I bred Brijett with a nice WG working line male and kept 2 of those pups.  Gouri (the male) is litterally a GENTLE GIANT.  He really reminds me of the Giant guy in the Harry Potter movies! LOL  Because he has no problem stopping someone, but very gentle with us and children.  Wants to be with her humans.  Very intense in his bite work, loves to track, full grip on the sleeve, decent OB (not as attentive as I would like).  I had him in the house once, and when he went to get up on my bed, it was like he was moving in slow motion...one foot at a time, and when he laid down next to me, he was making sure he did it in such a manner as to not hurt me.  His sister, on the other hand, is hell on wheels, and more like her mother! LOL

Anyway, nothing against the showlines, but i think that I prefer a combo of the DDR/Czech lines! :)  But I guess it would depend on what your intension are with the dog, and the environment you live in! :)

I have a 88.5% DDR and a the rest is West Working. He has nerves of steel, Ando is strong, eager to please and willing to work. I would personally choose DDR. My next dog which i am in the process of aquiring is full DDR and can't wait to get. Thanks Kelly at Boeselager for an Amazing Dog.

Christine,   would you tell us more about your male his name or pedigree? Was he 100% ddr?
