Can someone explain to me the difference between the Czech lines and DDR lines. I'm confused as someone had told me that Czech lines are DDR lines. Which lines are which, and what makes a dog DDR?

Thanks in Advance,

Beth

NOT 100% SURE, but I have heard,  that Czech dogs are from DDR dogs...not sure, don't shoot the messenger, just what I've heard.

Czech dogs usually go back to DDR dogs in the last 5 generations. But Czech lines also often include Belgian and other bloodlines. Despite common usage, the terms are not interchangeable. And, technically, no "real" DDR dogs have been bred, under the strict DDR breeding system, in more than 2 decades.

You can read detailed history on the web.

Basically after the end of World War II and the separation of East and West German the DDR was established in 1949 and had very strict and some consider harsh breeding requirements. Upon the tearing down of the Berlin Wall this strict breeding ceased.

The Czech dogs came from DDR dogs and some of their own. The Czech Army  Pohranicni Straze Kennel was established in the mid 1950's to breed working dogs to protect the border hence called Border Patrol Dogs. They also did some experiments breeding GSD's with wolves which you can also read about on the web.

Do some web searches and you can find interesting articles to read and see some of the differences they had.

You can start searches @ (DDR)  www.ddrledgends.com  &  (Czech) www.teremarcgermanshepherds.com  &  (Slovak) www.cqbk9.com/slovakian-policia-gsd.html

I added Slovak because they are some strong dog.
