When our puppy was very young his teeth appeared correctly aligned.  He is now 4½ months - everything is growing, but he is now overshot!

Could this be merely linked with his general growth (he is large), and the lower jaw has not quite caught up with the upper jaw yet?

Or, if he is overshot at this age, is that how it will remain?

(If he remains overshot, can this present a problem with eating or any other problem)?

Thank you for any advice,

Vixen

Vixen-give it time. The muzzle does not grow at the same rate as the lower jaw for many puppies. The puppy will be 100% correct one month-then overshot the next month. Male puppies have a more aggressive growth rate than female puppies and this compounds the issue.

Even if he has a slight overbite when he matures at three (3) years of age, this is 100% allowable as long as it does not exceed 2,0mm. Again, just give it time and I think you will be pleased with the outcome.

Best Regards,

Hello Bob-O,   Thank you for your really helpful response.  I was curious because of the comparison of when he was younger.   Thank you for explaining the growth situation.  He is growing in all directions at present !   lol

It is good to understand these things.

Grateful to you,

Vixen

Just to confirm Bob-O¿s reply, I was also worried about this recently, it happened to two puppies I kept from the same litter, a male and female, fine when tattoed, then both had an overbite at 4.5 - 5 months. Buy 7 months both had perfect bites again. I am sure your pup will be fine (just make sure there are no retained baby teeth, we had to have the milk canines removed in both these pups, they were not going to come out on their own and this was possibly affecting the bite).

My experience has been that by nine months  at the latest the bite is set and you won't see much if any changes after that for  good or bad.  On the other side over the years I have seen a few pups that AT 4-5 months had excessive overbite and it only got worse. Have also seen a few that did improve.

Good luck!
