What are the average costs involved when collecting semen from a male and storing it?

The cost for collecting semen can vary.

You can checkout the estimates that my vet charges for semen collection.

Before anyone gets any ideas, I didn't breed Jake, only requested estimates.

I got my boy's juice frozen.

$300 for the first collection/evaluation/freezing

$90 per year storage fee, per dog (doesn't matter how much is stored)

$250 for each additional collection/evaluation/freezing

Melanie

Also depending on how potent the dogs sperm is and how well it holds up to freezing depends on how many "breedings" you'll get out of one collection/ejaculation.

With Andy I got 5 or 6 breedings stored from one collection.

I know the prices would vary, but thanks for answering. It does not look that expensive.

My vet in VA who collects/stores/freezes charges $250 per collection/evaluation/freezing (includes everything) per dog, a little more for the first time.  $100/year per dog for storage (no matter how many straws)

Does one straw equal one breeding, or can you get multiple breedings from one straw?

Got this from my specilists website www.strawstopaws.com:

The number of straws required per insemination is determined by thawing a straw and rating its post thaw motility. For a frozen semen breeding you want to have a minimum of 100 million motile sperm per insemination. Each straw holds 50 million sperm but not all of them will survive the freezing process, hence the evaluation of "post thaw motility". The higher the percent post thaw motility the fewer straws are required. For example; if a sample is rated at a 70% post thaw motility, of the 50 million sperm in the straw 35 million will have survived the freezing process, so in order to get at least 100 million motile sperm you would need to use 3 straws (3 X 35 million = 105 million motile sperm).

Melanie

To clarify...one collection is exteneded and filled into many straws (how many is determined by sperm count) but each straw should equal roughly 50million sperm.
