WOW!! Thanks for posting that, Uglydog!  I can't find words to express how AMAZING that video is!

Wow.  I wonder if it's true.  I tried to see trick camera work, but every time I thought it might be a human arm, the camera pulled back to show the elephant trunk.  Amazing!

For those of you out there that know about training animals, I have a few questions.

Does this video show that there is "something more" than just a trained animal here?  Or does it show just that and nothing more?

Even if the elephant is trained to paint that exact and particular picture, it is still pretty amazing, the dexterity and accuracy...I have doubts about the "painting a self-portrait"  thing, but that doesn't detract from the phenomenon.

I just finished reading the latest National Geographic issue. The cover story is titled "Inside Animal Minds" and it tells how an elephant is self-aware. When shown its reflection in a mirror, it will move in an atypical way, watching itself. If a researcher paints a mark on the elephant's head, it will touch the mark on itself with its trunk, when it sees it in the mirror.

So, it's a leap of logic to say this, but, yes, I DO think an elephant is capable of doing what this elephant did. The more we learn about animal minds, the more we realize how badly we've underestimated them.

Wow, I think that elephant can paint better than me.  That's some pretty cool stuff!
