Does anyone know what type of microchip reader one must get to be able to read a microchip from Holland?  Is there a difference in the types of chips? If so, how many different types are there?  Thanks.

European chips don't read on US scanners. The US scanners will register that there is a chip but it can't read the numbers. Some US vets have the correct scanner.

The Homeagain World Scanner will read both European and USA chips..    Tha Homeagain Scanner was a little cheaper than my Avid universal scanner.  I know for a fact it works on European chips since I have both scanners and both types of chips in my dogs. Just remember most dogs from Germany have the chip implanted in the neck vs. the shoulder.  I would call Homeagain and let them know what you are looking for.   good luck!!!

I Forgot....Normally chip is on the left side of the neck, just under the ear.

My import from Holland had the chip in the left shoulder. Some USA scanners will indicate a chip but not read it.

My bitch is from Holland and no US scanner has even indicated a chip never mind read it. A friend with a import male from Holland was sent a portable scanner with the dog and that works fine on my bitch.  You should have received a separate document with her indicating her chip number and the manufacturer (the Raad db can be searched by chip number). I would suggest contacting the manufacturer of her chip and get a portable scanner from them - that way you know you will have one that will work.

There is an international ISO standard that all European chip makers abide by - thus their scanners can read US chips  but vice versa is not true. Some of the US companies CLAIM they abide by the ISO standard but they really do not. There are enough significant differences that their scanners can not read ( or consistently read) foreign chips.  Frustrating.
