HD is polygenic, with a major associated loci and several others that determine its expression.  The alleles known to be associated with an increased risk for hip dysplasia are found on multiple loci on more than a single chromosome, therefore a canine that has no symptoms can still produce the condition into its young depending on the other parent's genetic makeup.  You can make misery for a dog by undue stress causing the condition to manifest itself early in their lives, or take it real easy and never see the day in a dog that is otherwise genetically predisposed for it.  It's also believed by some that there may be a non-genetic variation of the condition, due to environmental variables, but I believe that some portion of polygenetic components were likely present in these cases.
