I am looking for opinions on the cost of a good workingline prospect for sport/police. I know there are many variables, but I'm not talking about an 8 wk old puppy that almost every breeder says is a good prospect. I see those in the classifieds every day. I'm talking about a 6 - 8 month old pup that has had foundation work in protection and obedience and shows good promise. Also, the pup would have to have a good pedigree with titled, proven parents. Any opinions on a price range?

Honestly I think it should be around1500.00 to 2000.00,what most breeders ask for all pups even the ones that don't stand a chance on the field. An pedigree everyone has a good one depending on what type of dog they like.Titles I don't really notice unless you're at the higher level trials an you actually compete not just showed up cause you scored 270.Most cases the best producers get over looked for a number of reasons.

http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/classifieds/55796.html  here is one i was just looking at myself.  i certainly don't need any more dogs than i already have, but if i were looking to purchase i would give sue a call.  these pups are well bred and come from very nice working lines.

I am positive that if you get off the internet and talk to breeders in person you will find much better price's than whats found online.   1500.00 to 2000.00 is way too much to pay for a puppy.     Everything online is three times the price compared to what they are getting on the ground in reality, sales are really off and its a buyers market right now.  Dont be afraid to make an offer.  Every ad online says top dog, the best of the best and so on.  Do your homework and shop around.

Two moons your right everything is to high. But a good 8 month pup that I can see what I'm getting an what he'll be is worth that to me.

I bought a 7 month old puppy with a excellent pedigree and exacly what you were talking about. I am in the U.S. and I paid $3000 including shipping from Germany.....But that was 9 years ago......so anyone saying 1500-2000 in my opinion is wrong.

You cant get a jack russel from around the corner for 300.00 now.But about 7yrs ago I got a 300.00 mali pup trained to a sch 3 270 an kicked ass.I didn't know how to track an still don't so her scores were low.At age 4 I sold her for a grand.

I think that everyone is missing the point thus far-- Triodegirl said 6-8 months.  There can be a lot of investment in time in a pup of that age, and it might have even been started on the sleeve, even if only the puppy sleeve.  Even the helper of the person's club already has a big investment in the training and time spent with the pup.  Such a pup might be halfway or more to the BH at that age.  So training, pedigree, looks, and gender are to be considered.  I would say $2000-$3500, depending on all those variables, and maybe more than that if it's a male who is a real pistol.   I know that seems like a lot, but how do you yourselves value 40-50 hours of work time?  That's just in training time up to the age of 6-8 months....how about the amount of time spent imprinting, housebreaking, socializing, and exercising the 6-8 month old pup?

You are loooking for a 6-8 month old puppy that has foundation work started then I would say the 1500.00 to 2000.00 would be about right reguardless if on the net or in person (unless there is something they are not telling you).

When you break it down  the cost of the puppy is around  1000.00- 1200.00 (norm)  some cases 1600.1800.00

then you have to figuring in vet work is all done at 6-8 months depending on if they did it them selves roughly 105.00

or vet a couple hundred.

then imprinting training which can vary depending on how much

I have see green dogs around that age for the police go for 3000.00 +  so

But too Moons is correct go see in person!!! test and make sure they have done what they are charging you for  or get videos (lots of them)

good luck

I'd be happy to find a decent prospect for for $1500 -2000. I agree with Slade that being able to see what you're getting with an older pup has to be worth something. I've found a few in the 3K price range, just wanted to know if that's a fair price.
