Since I have been old enough to earn an income, I have kept a yardfull of dogs. In the last 35yrs, my yard has never had less than 15 dogs. My yard has had as many as 60. I have made the statement, that I know each of my dogs bark. I have proven this a few times. I also know the type of bark. I know if they are just barking to bark. I know if there if there is a strange animal present. I know if there is a strange human present. I know if one of my dogs is lose, that shouldn't be.   Over the years, I have seen many different breeds perform different duties. Its comical, how within every breed, there are different factions of said breed, who look down upon other factions of the same breed.   With GSD's, the people who have German lines, turn their noses down on the American lines. The Working line fanciers turn down their nose on the High lines, and vice versa.  Its the same with other breeds.   During the years, trying to be in rural areas, with so many dogs, I have seen and experienced many things. I have seen dogs work in silence. I have seen dogs whine and cry, not from fear or desire to disengage, but rather the exact opposite. Just like humans, dogs have different styles.   If one enters a large Boxing Gym, you can see fighters working the heavy bag, shadow boxing, and sparring. You will see some fighters grunt as they punch. You will see some who make a hissing sound with each punch. Others will make no sound what so ever. I have seen tennis players, both male and female who make different sounds when they serve and return.   I'm pretty sure most all on the DB has heard me go on about my Maineiche/Karthago dogs. Blah....Blah....Blah....We bred a dog from these lines we named Razor. Razor is a gentle, snuggle bunny with the family. To everything else, he is a danger. I make my wife jog with Razor.  We are miles away from anyone.    One early summer morning, my wife went out for a run before the hot sun came up. I always make sure, she has Razor and her cell.  About 6am, I get a call from my frantic wife, that Razor is locked in combat with a big, boar badger. I grabbed my 357, hopped in the truck and took off. In about 2 minutes I was there. I flew out of the truck, came up on the pair, and saw it was over. The badger had expired and was leaking blood. Razor was deep in what looked to be the badger's armpit. He was whinning and digging deeper.   I got Razor off, and he was screaming at the top of his lungs to go back to the lifeless corpse.   Now in dogs, there is whining and screaming that means they are in pain, want out of the situation they are in etc.  There is also a whining and screaming that means exactly the opposite.   We have a Highline female GSD, named "Wilma". My wife say's Wilma is her's. Of course Wilma and I know that she belongs to me.  I tease my wife, and try to get a rise out of her, by telling  her, that Wilma is a Game Pitbull, hiding in a German Shepherd's body. Wilma will do anything. I mean anything.  Her ball and prey drive is beyond measure. Be it Swimming, Pulling, Retrieving, you name it for hours and hours, she will never stop.  I have never worked her at any activity, where she wasn't screaming to continue.    This summer I had planned on putting Wilma through an intense conditioning program. I plan on putting her Shredded and Conditioned pic up on the board in August.  Wilma will consume the best of beef and supps that include "Vertex" and "Waxy Maize".&n

Here's Wilma cooling down on a holding chain, after her workout. I live just North of the tracks. If you hop an Amtrack, just have the Conductor have the train stop and let you off.

I have one male that is very quiet, he only barks when he thinks there is something worth barking at.  But when he does bark it's a big boy bark.  When I take him places and pick up a friend, they are always surprised to realize he's in the van with us.  On the other hand, two of the girls are talkers.  Big big talkers.   Both bark and whine.  And like your's, it's not a scared whine, it's a "lets go do more" whine.

Wilma sure likes her tug of war game.

I have a 13 month old male that one individual tells me the whining and screaming is "prey lock".  I have never heard of that term and I have never had a dog do as he does.  When we were working with him when he was younger he would whine instead of bark when we did agitation and bite work.  Now he barks and whines, he is never in avoidance, and always comes back to the helper to resume the fight after he has gotten the sleeve. He comes from CZ/DDR bloodlines.   I will include the link to his pedigree.  Can anyone tell me about your experience, if any, with this phenomeona?

He is very focused in the other two phases of SchH, works as a service dog (goes to school with me on bus and trolley), and has gotten a A.H.B.A Herding Capabilities Test passed.  Thanks!

In general I've seen more whining in GSD's than most other breeds that I've been around.
