I don't know if there is a supplement.  I do know that feeding a species-apporpriate, prey-model diet requires no supplementation.  Some who feed this way offer salmon oil or fish body oil, but these can/should be given regardless of what's being fed.

I ddont feed supplements for calcium    I think it can be dangerous, to give calcuim in a supplement..Too much calium is not good for any adult  or puppy.....It can calsifiy in the bones , in the pancreas and cause kidney stones......

Use cottage cheese , yougurt and wisconsin  mild cheddar for treats..

fOR PROPER EAR STANDING  YOU NEED TO KEEP A BALANCED DIET OF COTTAGE CHEESE , YOGURT AND RAW MEATS STARTED AT 4 MOS...ADDED COW HOOVES OR RAW ROUND STEAK BONES TO CHEW ON EVERY DAY WILL STRENGTHEN HE LIGIAMENTS THAT GO TO THE EARS....SOME LARGE BONED GSD'S EARS WONT STAND CONTINUOUSLY UNTIL 6 -9 MOS OLD AS THE TEETH AND BONES AND FEET STARVE BODY OF MINERALS AND VITAMINS FIRST .....EARS ONCE STANDING AT 4 MOS MAY FALL IF TEETHING...DO NOT WORRY UNLESS YOU HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PARENTS OF GR PARENTS HAVING WEAK EARS...MOST WORKING LINES NEVER HAVE ANY PROBLEM  JUST SLOW TO STAY ERECT.

DO NOT OVERLOAD BODY WITH CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS...NOT GOOD FOR JOINTS OR FOR PUPS OR ADULT DOGS... UNLESS DOG HAS HEALTH ISSUE   RAW MEATS,,VEGGIES  ,,RAW WHOLE EGGS AND USUAGE OF BONES IN DIET...GREATLY HELP YOUR DOGS EARS AND BONE MASS DEVELOPMENT..

i USE MISSING LINK ON ALL ADULTS FOOD....ALSO A KIBBLE THAT IS FOR LARGE BREED HAS THE PROPER RATIO OF PHOSPHORUS IN IT...

Daredevil,

I'm more from an old school of thought and I lay a lot of emphasis on genetic makeup of the dog. All these supplements and everything are OK but genes play a lot of part in the overall health of the pup. This includes hips/elbows/ nerves /temprament and ears etc etc.

Yesterday I was at a pet shop and I saw a medicine for "calming" an aggressive dog. The basic ingredients of the medicine was a psychotropic substance. I was literally shocked at what all we people feed our dogs!!!!

Coming to my situation:--

I'm primarily looking for a Calcium +Phosphorus mix becauise My dog is giving a hard time taking Kibbles . I peronally feel that commercial dog food has a lot of research behind it and its ok to feed Commercial kibble to our dogs because a good quality kibble has all the balanced ingredients for a healthy growth.

But due to weather conditions my dog is being finicky about kibbles and feeeding raw or natural diet HAS to be balanced by a CAclium+Phosphorus mixture as this is the most essential ingredient for proper Ketones level in the dog and growth of the skeleton.

As for the ears give your pup some more time. I don;t know if the pup is out of your own breeding but if you have bought your dog from a breeder check the lines. If there is an issue of soft ears in the lines and the breeding program is well established then chances are your dog will have soft ears. You can tape them and try a lot of things . Other people on this thread have already given the suggestion about diet etc etc talk to some learned person and you will get good advice as to how to take the issue forward and solve the ear problem.

cheers

Vikram,

I'm sorry but kibble and canned food are created to appease the public's desire to apply a balance human's diet to that of a dog.  Dogs are carnivores.  They don't need the grain, vegetables and other fillers that are in these manmade products.  They need meat, bone and organ - period.

This site - http://sparkasynapse.blogspot.com/2008/02/more-on-dog-food.html - cites a study that indicates dogs fed a non-commerical diet lived on average 32 months more than dogs fed a commercial diet.  I believe that is significant.

No supplements are required when feeding raw.  Some offer salmon oil as a supplement, but that's it.

Dave:  You put it nicely and to the point...on thing I forgot to mention......Raw organ meats are full of natural vitamin  C and most impotrtant to the immune system

Mars,, Nestles and Colgate Palmolive make household products and candy and sweets...Now you convince me they know what is proper for a german shepherd......

Commercial dogs foods are a write off and a mega money marketing ploy and if you believe what is written on a bag of commercial dog food and treats you stuff your dog with,,,,,do a research on the healt of raw meat /barf diet feeders against a commercial dog food diet...feeder....if you sat in about 15 vets offices over a 6 mos period and took a survey as to what ills the dogs had and what they feed,,,,,you would ask  no more where to go and what to feed...I sat at mine last mo for a puppy check and heard 8 people that are raising 4 different breeds on     CORN   .....corn is for Hogs   not for DOGS..

It is a never ending arguement because every now and then you find one out of 10 dogs who survive on commercial dog food ...but most of those owner will fess up and tell you  ,,,their dog gets table scraps and guess where they get the nutrition.....from the human left overs....
