I am looking for feedback on non-prescription suppliments that anyone has used that work to help an older dog with severe hip dysplasia to have a better quality of life and less pain. There is so much out there that do the same thing. I am looking for the"best of the best" and money is no object. Right now I have dog on Synflex, Duralatin, Tramadol and Deramax. She is on more meds than I am. LOL Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

MSM, Ester C, Vitamin E, Cosequin, Salmon Oil are good. I have heard that some dogs respond to Acupuncture, but I don't know for sure, it's something you may wish to research. Of course there is all the non-medical stuff like keeping her very thin, a soft, but firm bed that's easy for her to get up and down on. Swimming and walking are good forms of exercise.
Good Luck!

Acupuncture is wonderful for many types of pain. Personally saw a friend's dog who could not walk up one step go to running up and down 6 or 7 steps and once again enjoy her life - problem was hip dysplasia. Check the web for holistic vets in your area. Some do both acupuncture and chiropractic. The additional plus is the ability to get rid of all the meds.

Try Animal Naturals product Joint Strong http://www.showandsport.com/joint_strong.htm. We have had great results with our dysplastic dog. It has natural anti-inflammatories and ingredients to support joint health. Be careful with chiropractic unless the vet sees the x-rays and knows the dog's history. Acupuncture, acupressure and massage therepy are also beneficial. Keep the muscle tone up and weight down. Good Luck

For a dog that bad, have you considered adequan injections? I understand that gives more help than the oral medicines. But I agree, it may be time - I hate to see a dog wtih all the stops pulled out and the dog is still miserable.

My girl has severe arthritis in her elbow and I put her on walkabout and it did wonder's. I think her body is getting use to it though, so I am putting her on canine complete joint mobility to see how that goes. Both of these are all natural, and I have heard great reviews on the joint mobility. Here is the link to walkabout www.naturmix.com and here is the link to the joint mobility www.k9power.com/wholistic_joint_mobility.php if this link doesn't work just go to www.k9power.com and that should work. If it still doesn't work just email me. Hope this helps your dog out!!

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I ordered some salmon oil suppliment and "Walkabout". I am seriously thinking about trying accupuncture for her as well. I am hoping that my girl's excessive discomfort lately has been due to the winter we in Illinois had this year, but I know I may be wishing for too much. She is going on 10 years old and has been severly dysplastic all her life, so in hindsight she has had a pretty good quaility to her life for more than I had expected. I just feel so bad for her as I know how she is feeling. I myself am recovering from a Total Knee replacement done in October of 2007 and know 1st hand how panful joint problems are.
Both of us have been on Synflex since it 1st hit the market. LOL Thanks again
Sue
