i know that there are people on the database that dont use their name out of fear of the "crazy" people in the world finding out who they really are.  my question is

why so many (usually  newbies) take so much advice from people who dont use their real name?

if i am wanting to take advice from someone, i want to know who they are, what expierence they have, who or what they base their expierence on, etc, etc, etc.   not some unknown somebody who can type good and make themself seem knowledgable.

your thoughts please.

John,  I don't think a Newbie is necessarily taking advice from an anonymous poster.  I think they read the whole post and then make their own minds up who is credible and who is not.  I usually do not sign my name but all you have to do is google my dog's name and it will come up.  It is not as if I am anonymous, because who is in this day and age?  But I would like my name used with some respect and not thrown out to people who I do not know or to whom I would never offer my first name to.

And to you, greetings from Maren

Good question and easy answer for me.  from day one when our family bought our first computer and got on the internet we did not allow our children to use their real names, address or phone numbers while online. Too many mean people in the world. my wife and i havet  followed the same rules we set for our kids. i dont really care if anyone knows my name but we have always had this rule.

To be honest with the ease of setting up websites and all the people who mis-represent themselves  and their dogs its hard to tell who the real breeders are. The longer I stayed on this board and stayed in touch with the dog world I now know alot of who the best breeders are but it does take awhile.

jletcher,

I dont think anyone takes advice as gospel,  only as reference and opinion.

I like to hear different views to compare to my own.    I hope no one is so gullable that they would not use thier own judgement and take all this that seriously without question.

sunshine,  that is how i see it also.   as for the respect part, i usually add info if i have it to give.  i dont degrade people because they call me a name, i try to stay away from those post.    i have added a funny line to a post or two, when it was something funny.

DR, good rule to have when you have children.  my wife and i do not so i guess the most we have to protect is ourselves.   thank God my wife is the strong one who keeps me in line.

all in all i guess i started this due to all the ill feelings between a lot of the members here.  i try to get along with everyone,, and if i cant i ignore them.   i would strongly suggest this to all.

as hard as it may be at times, a difference in opinions is just that, and not a reason to get into a verbal name calling match with someone else.

well thats my "make peace, not war" speech for today,

everyone take care, stay happy, and i hope to see you somewhere down the road,,,,,,,,,,

I've had friends get into situations where they dont let a whole lot of information online because people have harrased them for it.  To this day there are names and kennels I wont mention online because I dont want those people to be harrased.

I dont really care if the information is anonymous or not - as long as it is good information then it's valid to me.  I've learned as much from those who only go off of their handle as I do from those who say their names.  Personally...I dont have a problem blaring to the world who I am - within reason - it's kinda skabie how easy it is to get a home address these days.

And the other thing is people arent going to use this site as their only source of information - there's always ways to backtrack and check on information through other forums or through some of the major search engines - or my favorite - academic journals  (<= Cate the geek).  Books are pretty spiffy too - though quite frankly experience in the real world is the very best :)

The other nice thing about the internet is people who might not be so articulate in real life might have a better time of articulating what's on their mind via the internet because they can proof read...sadly....those of us with foot in mouth cant really proofread the verbomit that comes out of our mouths sometimes - even if it wasnt what we intended.

Ceph,

Very good point.  I think most people are mature enough to know and understand that, as in anything in life, everyone will have different opinions.  But most also use their own judgement (atleast I hope they do).

I, too, like to gather opinions and/or advice, and try what works best for me! :)  I do try to stay clear of those that "claim to be an expert," unless they have proven their point to me.

Different strokes for different folks! :)

Christine
