My pup is having a white discharge from her vaginal area. It is not constant but mostly after she goes potty. It looks like a thin white piece of snot. Otherwise, she is normal in activity, energy, and eating. I brought her to vet as I was worried. Her temp was normal. She had very, very slight vulva swelling (probably from some licking) but, otherwise, nothing abnormal. He cultured her and called today with result. Said cytology came back normal. He thinks she is getting ready to come back into heat. Weird as she had a full heat in January.
Is it abnormal to have a heat every 4 months? Also, will this effect her ability to be bred someday?
Lastly, any other suggestions on what it could be if not a precursor to heat?
Thanks,
Sara

yeast infection?

How old is the bitch? My bitch is young and had her first heat cycle at the end of September/beginning of October, and then another at the end of January and into the beginning of February. I heard it's common for the first few to get into a rhythmic cycle. Some bitches cycle more times a year than others, and I don't think that it will affect the possibility of her being bred (although I did read that if a bitch cycles 4 times a year, it's likely one cycle she won't ovulate, but I don't know how much of that is true). When she goes back into heat, you can always take her to the vet and get her checked to make sure she's ovulating. Hope this helps.

Nope. not yeast. Cytology came back normal with no infections.
Macrowe, She just turned 11 months. Her first heat was at 8 months and lasted a full month. Did your bitch have a full heat cycle or an abbreviated one? I heard of a split heat but vet said first heat doesn't last long...
Good idea to get her checked at next heat to see if she is ovulating.
I hope it is nothing abnormal going on here.

we had a female who had 4 full cycles a year and sadly she rarely took on breedings and only had 2-4 puppys a litter. i dont know if it was just her or if her cycles where involved in it

Bummer.
Well, she has not come into heat yet so this is all speculation on my part. I am hoping she is just establishing her heat pattern as she is so young and her first heat was at just turned 8 months old. I guess I'll have to wait and see......
I wonder if anyone ever seen a similar discharge from a bitch and it was perfectly normal? It is not constant just intermittent.

my female did have that white discharge you are talking about and really did not cause a problem, she had it for a few years and then it went away. she had pretty normal cycles, first one was short , but that is normal, she was also bred a few times and had good size litters of 6- 9 pups, so no problem there. i would not worry about it , just see how she goes.

Most research that I've read says that females need 110 days between heat cycles in order to be able to get pregnant. I have had several females who had 4 month cycles--they never had a problem getting pregnant. A 3-month cycle is too short, though.

Smiley, if a vet had cultured/cleared your bitch of any health issues and she was on heat at the age of 8 months, and now with swollen vulvar/discharge, then be rest assured that she's about to come in heat. From personal expirience, this is a "classic sign" of imminent heat in the next couple of day(say a weeks time). Young bitch, especially GSDs are known to come m heat 4 months plus.
