Hello to you all,
my daughter aged 11 posed a question as to whether a bitch can give birth to twins within a litter. I don't know the answer to this one, so I am hoping that the breeders here can maybe answer it for me. How would you know if the pup was a twin?
My opinion is yes, as they are mammals. But does that follow? I don't know!!
Over to the experts please.
Regards and a Happy Easter to you all
Ann.

Aye! In me opinion, sometimes in big litters it be possible t' have different sets of twins aye Now, as ye can tell, me no scientist aye... me not know the scientific Criteria needed to prove twins, but if appearance and actions be it, then me say it be possible. With t' litters me seen, t' twins usually be opposite sex. It not be GSD's but me needed some stock dogs as me Catahoula getting long in t' tooth aye. Me bred him and had a litter of 9 aye. Thar be not a twin in t' bunch Aye!

Back in the day of breeding rotts, I had 2 puppies born sharing the same bag, 2 placenta's but same bag. I guess those could have been considered twins

In order for puppies to be identical twins, they must both be contained in the same placenta. They would look identical and both have the same exact gene pool. As far as I know that would be extremely rare in the dog world. Not impossible, but not something most of us will ever see.

Blitzen, Not that rare. I've seen it several times - in a variety of pedigrees.

No kidding, twins? I used to whelp litters for other breeders and between theirs, my own and the ones we whelped at the clinic. I've seen a lot of litters born but not one single set of twins.

Yes, according to my vet, it is not only possible, it happens. With my last litter, I had twins. They actually shared the placenta, as Blitzen said. To this day, you can't tell them apart! :)

Blitzen: I had twins in Rosies first litter of 10...My vet , then , took pics of them and put them in a Veterinirian magazine and somewhere I have that front cover.....yes , only once for me,,but they looked alike until they turned about 20 months old...and then the red on one pup got more on her face than the other one...I kept one of them but sold her at 24 mos old....

Since I don't expect to ever whelp another litter, I guess I'll never have the opportunity to see identical doggie twins.
