Would somebody please explain to me the benifits, reasons, pros, cons(if any) of doing a DNA test on your breeding dogs? Is it something just done to the sires, or to both damn and sire? Is it done to the puppies also?
Thanks.

Hi, Harley Girl
It is as Tigermouse says for identification, to see it is bred as stated, And if you want to Breed with the Dog then i think it is a must
My Fred was done when they put him out to X-Ray his Hips, just a matter of taking a Blood Sample they send it to the Same Place as the Hip X-Rays but it is tested by different people

Is there a difference of doing the cheek swab that the AKC offers vs blood work done? Which I am assuming the blood test might be a bit better.

not that much difference really , i use cheek swabs. the lab will get back to you if thairs a problem.

I have found out one thing about DNA testing...If you buy a dog from Germany and have a DNA test done through the SV...That's great...but when you go to register a dog with the AKC and use them for breeding...You must now do a DNA test through the AKC...they won't accept the DNA test that was done through the SV...It just seems like this is redundant and the AKC is once again just after the Dollars...
Any comments are welcome...

Thank you everybody for your help, I am gonna order a kit from the AKC and get her done. Is there an age requirement for that or any time is fine?

Another question about DNA testing. As a buyer, is this something that should be looked for also along with hips and elbow testing? Or is it more for a breeders piece of mind? (for lack of a better term)
