Ah spring is in the air and that means return of the SKUNKS. Never remembering from one year to the next my dogs (at least 2 of them) got the full frontal facial blast. The skunk is now dead so at least I won't have to worry about that one reproducing. But the odor of his/her presence remains.

What are some home remedies or storebought that you have that work quickly AND effectively. Hauling an 85 lb german shepherd into the home bathtub for tomato juice is just not going to happen.

Bob-O you mentioned some "special remedy" in the 'muddy dog post' , could you share?  I don't even want to go outside to see how many dogs really got hit :( Thankfully 2 of them were in the house and avoided confrontation)

I guess because gsd don't see well in the dark they go to investigate the sounds/smells and end of getting sprayed before they realize what they have encountered. At least I hope that's it and they are not just "Stupid" I just hope they learned a lesson and this won't happen again during the spring season... LOL... how many years does it take before "I" realize it will always happen... LOL

I had a dog that hated skunks, often...LOL     I found no magic bullet, only time.   The dogs dont mind the smell...LOL

Dogs see just fine in the dark and know full well what they are investigating, especially skunk.  And some of them take great joy in killing skunks.

Skunks are known carriers of rabies..........keep dogs UTD on shots.

The Skunk Remedy Home Page: http://home.earthlink.net/~skunkremedy/home/

One treatment turned a badly skunked dog into one that was fit for polite company again, and made a believer out of me. Previous remedies had required 5 or 6 treatments, and left the dog bad enough that we needed to have the windows open all weekend. In February. In Ontario, Canada. Noooo, she was NOT a popular doggie that weekend!

I know I'm strange but I actually like the smell of skunk, at least from a distance..lol

Its kinda like Black powder, stinks up close but sweet at a distance...    I'm just strange...:)

This may sound weird, but a friend suggested this years back, and I found that it worked well.  (living on a farm, this skunk thing happens at least once a year)

Use feminine douches, just buy the cheap ones and give the dog a bath using them.  I found it worked better than the tomato paste/juice remedy.  Beware, you will get odd looks from the cashier when you buy a dozen Masengills  : )

Good luck, Jennifer

Thanks all - I'm on my way to the store for the ingredients.

Sunsilver - GREAT site on the recipe and very informative - you even learn the chemistry of it all-the ingredients and why they work on the oily skunk spray. Also interesting to learn the chemistry behind why the traditional "tomato juice remedy" can lead to the "return"of the skunk odor when the dog gets wet at a later date.

Holtgrew  - Can't use anything "scented" my husband is very sensitive to any thing with fragrance and gets an immediate headache but maybe someone else can use that method.

Two Moons- don't know where you live but if you enjoy the smell I could bring by some visitors until the smell "wears off" HAH LOL

There is a chemical put out by a laboratory in USa that is called    Skunk Off....it can be ordered ...call the Canine officer of your local health department and get the name of the company or gt them to order you a can of it.......also after treating for several times     the second bath  use  three large cans      quart size of cheapest tomatoe juice you can buy......three or four quarts and soak the boy or girl down     .....do not rinse off......after several hours rinse with warm water...his face is probably what got it the worse...my Bear got into a fight with a female skunk  she was fierce and she must have had babies somewhere close in my acreage....she ran off when i came out the door with the shotgun...I put him in a quick kennel out front till morning as this was 2 am in the morning he had the dance with the lady skunk......I threw away his bandana and it took 5 weeks to get the smell off his face......be sure to clean out ears with ear clean and put some murine in dogs eyes unless you have eye clear from the dog companies.....

Good luck and do not let him in your house...for 4 weeks....you will never get the smell out   put him in sun and make sure he stays in a very well ventilated area.....

Honey   german  shepherds have one of the best eyesights of any canine on earth...its not their eyesight that failed...it is the hunt of the prey....a german shepherd uses   5 senses very well.....sight ,,,smell,,, sound ,,touch and taste..

Percentage of use is   sight  50%    touch is 10%  taste is 20%   ears is 70% and the nose is   100%.

Your german shepherd smells that skunk the minute he come within 10 blocks of your place....
