I just wanted to share. I have a female with chronic diarrhea . I have spent aout 3200 dollars trying to help her. I took her ti University of Florida vet school. nothing. A holistic vet I went to put her on Okra pepsin, it worked, now we switched her to marshmellow root. works just as well and only cost 8 dollars a bottle, 2 month supply. The dog is a puppy again. Bye

Thanks! Is Okra Pepsin from a healthfood store or a drug store or where? Can you share the dosage for both remedies?

Interesting, thanks for the tip. Did the vets ever find out the cause of the diarrhea? IBD perhaps? Just wondering what tests they did - there must have been a cause?

My first thought was EPI.

There is a cause for chronic diarrhea and something has been missed. Dogs should not have chronic diarrhea. If you would like to email me privately or PM me, I would be happy to ask you a lot of questions to see what has and has not been done. It is dangerous to simply accept your dog has chronic diarrhea. Find the root cause and treat that.

I am with the above - there is a reason........ie food/medication/water/organism etc. But I do know of a friend that had the same problem and the Vet gave them Metrozidinal (sp.) and she was a homeopthic Vet and change food completely and included in a daily diet Metamucil (for fiber to firm up the stool) and organic pumpkin in a can. Good Luck and let us know what helps. Make sure she is not dehydrated (which I am sure you did) but it can happen fast with diarrhea.

Hi Liberalandy,
can I ask how many times in your puppies life her diet was changed, and from what to what?
I am only asking cause I had sold a healthy pup to a lady that changed her diet 5 times in 5 weeks,
to totally different things, and went to the vets, asking why her puppy had diarrhea, and the vet. put pup on
anti-biotics, and steriods, and Hills Prescription diet.
That's when I changed my puppy contract to read, if for" ANY REASON "you do not want your pup please
return pup to me for FULL REFUND.
She said she thought it had an irritable bowel, when all it had was, my owner is impatient, and keeps
changing my diet!
The pup has gone to a new home and is fine.
I am sorry if I am coming on too strong to you, I am very happy that your dog is feeling better.
It's just that I recently read a post about something called comicalm or something, and I think it's
just B.S that anyone would think to give a dog anti-depressant's, to me, that's depressing!!!!!
COME-ON!!! It's a poor defensless dog that relies on it's owner to do the right thing!
Give your dog turkey, it has tryptophan in it, that will calm you down naturally, ( Oh no not that!)
When I was growing up in the sixties & seventies, there were no pills that magically made things
disappear, unless they were illegal!
I'm sorry but I breed dogs that are wash n' wear, they are tough through & through, if they need a bath
they jump in the Atlantic Ocean, and then they run beside my bike & drip dry!
They have been bred for temperament, and if they didn't have strong nerves, I would be shocked cause
their pedigree reads differently, and I have failed as a breeder of GSD's to not have bred a wash n' wear
dog, shame on me.
Anyway. I am truly sorry if I bummed you out, I just think that if you are looking for something wrong, you will probably find it,
to me the glass is always half full.

sorry Mira's mom but I completely disagree. While it is good to breed wash and wear dogs, I'm sure they can run across a bed of nails too as tough as they sound in this message, not everybody HAS one of these dogs. There are dogs out there that do not cope. You're gonna say those dogs can't live a better life because YOUR dogs can cope? Nobody on the clomicalm thread said to just start giving meds to dogs because they're "depressed". But with a dog that is so anxious they can't cope (think of the dog that chews its paws to a pulp if you leave the room for more then 10 minutes, I've personally worked with one of those dogs and believe me there was nothing but meds that allowed us to fix that dog and then we faded out meds). Or for one of my own personal cocker spaniels (he's now long since gone). At 10 he had been housetrained but started having accidents in the house. No amount of reverting housetraining helped, and he would have had to live for the next 2 years in a crate (towards the very end he did have to live in a crate) and there was no medical reason. Vet prescribed an anxiety med. Stopped it immediately, we worked the housetraining routine, and faded out meds (we had moved by the way that stressed this old guy out who had lived in the same house for several years). Would it have worked without meds? dunno. But it worked fast that way (within 1/2 a day) and it allowed me time to work with him, while not keeping my dog stressed out. So while your tough as nails shepherds can deal with certain things, not all dogs can and it's kind of not fair for you to knock those who have the different types of dogs (I do btw have shepherds that are wash and wear, but I see enough basket case dogs that can benefit.
BTW, some dogs have problems with turkey, and tryptophan doesn't work for every dog. the tryptophan in content-um was tried prior to putting the dog that chewed paws bloody prior to putting on meds. Point being, everybody is different, just because somebody goes a different route does not make that person full of bs.
On the diarrhea I would try to find the cause for sure, just making the diarrhea stop can't be totally good. It should be stopped no-less to prevent further problems, but I would still want to know WHY rather then just put a band-aid on the problem.

I have always used a doggie probiotic, Jarro is a good brand, also if the dog food has any corn in it, I have been told by my vet that this can cause the runs in sensitive dogs. Sounds like you did just fine, I am sorry that you had to spend so much. I am blessed with a good vet who believes in holistic and medicinal cures. I also have a couple good friends who have studied doggie diets for many years so I am pretty lucky whenever my dogs have diet issues.
Another thing I have learned over the years is that my dogs will sense any disharmony or stress in the household. For instance, my dogs got the runs for a few weeks straight when I was studying for my finals and was stressed over that. I thought I was doing a really good job of coping constructively, taking them out regularly to work and not changing their routine. Silly me.....they knew.
I am also open to any other suggestions on this issue. I will file yours under things to remember. Thanks for sharing.
