I'm curious as to what experiences you have had with sending your bitches away- unattended-on an airplane, to someone you know for matings.

Do they come back pregnant or does the  stress of the trip cause them not to have litters?

Is the timing of shipping them back important?  would you leave them there for a certain amount of time after mating until pregnancy is confirmed?

So far we had no problems with our females we send to Germany or Denmark.  Yes they are some what stressed so you send them early as soon you know they are starting there cycle.  When they have been bred they will wait until she is 3-4 weeks in to her pregn. and the OK from the Vet is received.  Sometimes but it did not happen to us some of the breeders say she lost some pups on the flight over but that is not a sure thing.  When she gets her ultra  they see how many pups may be in side of her.  Are you thinking about sending your bitch ??     You can always see what comes up here from other breeders and there experients.  I hope that helps just a little bit.

I usually send my females early and let them acclimate to their new surroundings. I send them back once they are confirmed and about 2 weeks from their delivery date. My success rate is pretty good with this method and if there's a missed litter, she's still there for her next heat cycle. Check the costs now and see if it's worthwhile. The dollar has fizzed to an all time looooow.

When I send a female that is ready to be bred to a male and she's shipped back to me after the mating, my percentages are much lower. I'm in the 50% range. The percentages go up if you travel with them yourself and remain with them.

Females that come here from time to time expierience a delay in their cycle it seems. They arrive a day or so before their time, but they don't breed for a day or so after the day they should. The percentages of females that ship and get pregnant seem to be less than those that are brought here.

I'm curious to hear what others have experienced.

Why would a breeder who suppose to love their dogs take their female to the airport and trust a complete stranger to handle their thoundsands of dollars worth dogs ? Do you guys do interviews with the workers who handles the animals at airports? Or do background test? Just how do you know that once you leave, the workers isn't going to terrorize your dog? or kick (or purposely run over a bump on the road, quick slam on the brakes so the crate can bounce around) the crate because your dog is barking and wont shut up?

If I was going to be breeding my dog, I would never trust someone whom I don't know of to handle her at a airport.. I would try to get Frozen/chilled seman as a first option, if that option isn't available I would get her certified as a service dog and take her to the destination myself.

I guess I'm overly sensitive when it comes to the wellfare of my dogs.

Brit.  You have no idea how things go off in the Airport.  First of all let me tell you they are secure in the same way we are there crates are getting checked so there are no hitten items then the dogs are handelt and put in to the crate and then sealed all around they are very well aware how much this dogs are worth so do believe me they would not dare doing anything in what you are describing.  You must not ever have done that but a looooot of breeders have with no disappointments.  So please do not touch that you do not know what you are talking about.   Question to you what about the breeders there go overseas to the SIEGERSCHAU where do you think there dogs are swimming hehehe  CIAO  Stephanie

I was just curious about how much this generally cost - If my bitch passes her tests I would like to send her to either Germany or Austria for a breeding - but I am not entirley sure how it works - I thought about going there with her and spending a week there - but it sounds like they need to be there longer O.o

I have not flown any female to date, I would probably go with my bitch if/when that day comes. I am very overprotective. I don't think I could ever ship a dog to someone I had not met in person at least once.

I did however, breed my female to Yacco von der Vallendarer Hohe in October. I just want to share that his owner Mike Florea is the nicest man. He drove halfway to meet me, cutting my drive in half. My dog was kept in his home and treating like family.  He took her for an extra progesterone test, took pictures of the breedings, typed up a copy of the exact times/lengths of the breedings, and even took some lovely photos of her for me. She came home relaxed, happy, clean, and in great condition. Anyone considering sending their bitch to Yacco, rest assured she will be well cared for.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Does anyone else have experience with shipping bitches away for breeding??

There must be more people than the few who have answered to have done this.

Of course I would like to go with her but this may not be possible.

I have shipped adult dogs for breeding and other purposes, from Anchorage, Alaska--- which is probably closer to Siberia than to mainland USA--- to Washington, California, Chicago, Michigan, Oregon, Mississippi, and Georgia, no problems.  I've sent pups and young dogs to Florida, Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, California, Michigan, Oregon, Washington, and places I've just simply forgotten!!  No problems.  Also shipped dogs in from Europe.  Now, the last trip from Europe, hubby and I went there in person with the main reason to inspect the dogs, and then bring them back to Alaska.  The trip was 28 hours long, and might have caused the two bred bitches to re-absorb some puppies. Athos was sick for a couple of days, not wanting to eat much.  That is the worst that happened, and it happened on the trip where we accompanied them.   Veronica

Veronica, how many days pregnant were the bitches that reabsorbed?
