MIAMI (AP) - A Miami police officer surrendered Monday to face animal cruelty and other charges in the death of his K-9 partner, a female bloodhound named Dynasty.

Officer Rondal Laroy Brown, 48, will be released on bail, his attorney said.

An investigation showed that Dynasty, who was donated to the Miami Police Department in 2004 and specialized in finding missing people, was in good health in January 2007 and weighed 66 pounds. In November when she died, the 4-year-old dog weighed only 33 pounds, had sunken eyes and missing hair, and had a wound on one paw.

Brown reported the dog had died on Nov. 30 and told a supervisor she had gotten loose and may have eaten some rat poison at a nearby construction site. But a necropsy revealed Dynasty suffered from severe malnutrition and dehydration.

Brown has worked at the Miami Police Department since 1987 mostly with dogs. His attorney, Bill Matthewman, said Brown is innocent and would never hurt a dog.

"The allegations are utter and complete nonsense," Matthewman said.

The case is the second involving K-9 cruelty allegations in the Miami area recently.

A Miami-Dade County police sergeant, Allen Cockfield, is awaiting trial on charges of animal cruelty and killing a police dog, both felonies. Cockfield has pleaded innocent to kicking to death his assigned German shepherd, Duke.

FBI Agent Shoots Fluffy

FBI Agent And Sniper On Swat Team Shoots Neighbor's Family Pet

Don’t Mess With Texas

March 7. 2008

Clearly the dog needed a bullet proof vest as shown above

An FBI agent shot Fluffy. Yes, really! He shot Lassie. Seriously, FBI agent Lovett Leslie Ledger, 39, was arrested for popping a cap in a little Chihuahua as it walked in front of his house.

Wow, rough neighborhood when a dog can’t walk in peace without getting picked off. If he did that to the dog, can you imagine what he does to people during FBI raids.

“(March 7, 2008)—FBI agent Lovett Leslie Ledger, Jr., 39, of Lorena surrendered Friday morning to McLennan County authorities and was charged with animal cruelty in the shooting death of a Central Texas family’s pet dog...

According to the arrest affidavit, Ledger told a witness that he shot the gun with a pump bb/pellet gun and said he, “must have pumped the gun up too much.”

The 3-to-4 pound Chihuahua was walking on Estes Road in front of its home when it was shot once. It ran into the yard of one of Ledger’s neighbors, where it died.

Sources told News Ten Ledger is a sniper and a member of an FBI SWAT team. http://www.kwtx.com

Sorry, I reposted the article...AGAIN, before I noticed the article on Miami PD's seemingly habitual abuse of their best officers. Again, responsible breeders; do NOT sell GSD's to Florida law enforcement!

I had a friend who used to shoot her chickens with a bb gun or .22 birdshot to keep them off the porch and out of her garden, and also used it on the horses to keep them from chewing wood.  No harm, just a sharp sting that worked wonders.  Then she shot one elderly hen who was in her garden who had a coronary from the shock though the pellet itself did not even penetrate the skin.   Ordinarily, the use of .22 bird shot or a bb gun is not a fatal thing to use, but the guy did not take into account the diminuative size of the dog, and it might have been old like the hen I just mentioned.
