I can't do much digging on this without running into the language barrier. What is the relationship between this dog and the GSD? Is it simply a catch-all term for the old-style herding dogs that the GSD came from? Or is/was it ever a recognized breed?  If they ARE a breed, is it recognized by any official body?

Thanks for your help!

Not FCI recognized. It is commonly used for long coat GSDs, which may or may not be pedigreed. There are several breed clubs that breed and show and trial outside the FCI, their dogs are pedigreed of course. But these pedigrees may not be recognized by the AKC, in case you are thinking of importing one (in that case have them send a copy of a pedigree and check with AKC or UKC if they will accept it). The pups are actually quite popular in Germany among the 'common' folk who just want a great companion and sport dog for everyday stuff, and not the whole hoopla that comes with the regular GSDs.

The Altdeutscher Hütehund is in reference to old type herding dogs. Some have their own breed names, but usually there are too few living dogs left to ever get proper breed recognition. There are only a handful of breeders left that continue with these type of dogs. Some unpedigreed, but still a valuable piece of history to maintain.

I"ve been doing some digging on one of these dogs, and it has SV registered ancestors on both sides of its pedigree. Probably just a long-haired GSD, no? On the one side, the dam is registered, on the other I had to go back to the great grandparents on the grand-dam's side to find registration. THAT line traces eventually to Bernd von Lierberg!

It's the Longcoats they where called Altdeutscher Schaeferhund, If you get a Longcoat with Reg, papers you will be able to AKC reg, them, although you can NOT show them in AKC shows, I Show mine under UKC before you can show UKC they will have to be reg. with them. I have mine AKC, UKC, and CKC= Canadian reg , if you want them rated you can reg. them with  IABCA = International All Breed Canine Association.

We due have a Club for our longcoats LSVD it's in German but if you right click and sroll down click on Translate into english.
