Can dogs have Laryngitis?  I just picked up my dogs from 5 days in the kennel.   When I brought them home I was watching some of GSDFAN's training videos (to catch up on what I missed this week while away).  Usually as soon as start watching a protection video - Molly will start running around the house and will start barking excessively until the video ends.  Tonight she came up to the screen and tried to bark and it sounds horribly hoarse - barely a sound come out and it she seems uncomfortable to bark.  She is a barker so can imagine she spent the past 5 days barking her head off, so can dogs lose their bark?

Hi Renofan2

It sounds like your dogs have Kennel cough

dogshome9:

Wouldn't there be other signs if it was kennel cough?  They are vaccinated (for kennel cough), but I realize the vaccinations does not cover all strains.

Yes, your dogs could be hoarse from barking. It's not unusual for this to happen when they've been boarded, if they are nonstop barkers. Kennel cough is exactly that:: the dog would be COUGHING.

Well - no coughing.  Just a very strange, hoarse bark and very tired, which is normal for her after coming home from the kennel.  So I take it just rest her bark?  Any home remedies for soothing a dogs throat?

Get her a shock collar to stop her barking...

(Sorry, suffering from cabin fever, and feeling mean here!)

At home she is not a barker - only at the kennel, so while she is with me, she should have plenty of time to heal.  Now only if she would have lost her bark - while doing the bark and hold.  That would have impressed me, lol.

Sunsilver:

How much snow did you get?  We ended up with all rain/flooding and last night high winds and now temperature has dropped.  Would have prefered having a little snow instead of all this rain.

Hi Cheryl,

Yes sometimes my guys have come home hoarse from barking at the kennel.  Whether or not that is it, who knows.  But, they've all come home hoarse at one point or another.

When I was a teenager we had a real high strung GSD named Max, who was a one family
dog, he was so spoiled and never went anywhere with strangers.
Our house burned down & our family had to stay at a motel a few days, no pets were allowed,
so Max had to get boarded at some kennel.
After we got the poor guy back, he had no bark left in him, he must had barked the whole time,
from the time he was dropped off till we got him, boy was he happy to see us!
