I came across this website today (killing time) now in NO WAY AM I KNOCKING THIS

breeder - every one is intitled to bred how and what they want. ( not looking to bash the breeder at all !!)

What I am more interested in or shocked over was  when I saw his pedigree, can this be correct?

I have not seen a German bred dog like this before , is this new or old?  or just a oops in the breeding?

It's a liver coloured GSD, result of a recessive gene. The genes for liver and blue are present in quite a few lines of both American and German dogs. Nothing to do with bad breeding at all, although the colour is not recognized by either AKC or the SV, and the dogs can't be shown.

Of course, purists would say these dogs shouldn't be DELIBERATELY bred, as these people are obviously doing, but even a conscientious breeder can have the odd one pop up in a litter now and then.

Somewhere is a website that lists the dogs known to carry the liver and blue genes. I believe it lists German dogs as well as American. Let me see if I can find it....it contains some VERY well known names!

I think I'm going to stick with the DDR dogs, I have never seen an off color one,

or for that matter a dwarf one.......www.geocities.com/heartland/meadows/6074/

I may be close minded, but it's just from my experience I've had with their bloodlines.

Found it!  It also lists known white and long-coat carriers.

If you want more information on this, there have been numerous recent threads discussing it. Just hit the 'search database' button and type in 'liver color'!

Here's one thread with a wealth of info: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/155934.html#155993

Jeck von Noricum was a carrier of the liver gene!

mirasmom, yeah, that's probably because they cull them at birth. If you check the list of carriers out, I'm sure you'll see some names you recognize. Here's the direct link for it: http://www.geocities.com/sahiela2/DiluteCarriers.html
