My 8 1/2 month old has not had her first heat yet, started limping yesterday. I made an appt. with her vet but can't get in till monday. Now I was going to wait till she was a year to have her hips and elbow prelims done, but I have read they can be done now. So should I get the prelims done now or wait till she is a year?

Does HD effect them right away, as far as limping would go? I mean is is possible to go from normal one day to HD limping the next?

If I have her prelims done now and it is pano, will that effect the OFA results at all?

Thanks

Do you have her on puppy food or adult? Too much protein can cause rapid growth and could be the cause of what she is experiencing. Switching from puppy food to adult at 5 or 6 months is recommended.

The prelims can be done now but to be official I believe the dog must be a year.

She has been on adult dog food since I brought her home at 12wks old, and she is currently on Breeders Choice, Avoderm.  I am thinking, hoping that it is just her growing, I also give my dogs Nupro Joint Supplement.

Pano usually affects males and usually on the front legs. You can do prelims as early as 6 months and have them evauated by the O.F.A. . However, a good vet can easily see if there is a problem by veiwing the x-rays himself. Good luck and hope she gets better.

It is not so common for females to incur Pano, and even so she is a bit young for that. It is likely a sprain, and those can take a long time to heal.

Of course only a radiographic examination will determine the present quality of the hip joints. Hip dysplasie can manifest itself to the end that limping begins, but I think one would notice that the dog has issues rising from a laying position moreso than limping.

I am hoping for you that it is but a sprain. I presume that you reside stateside, and your female is not too young for an O.F.A. preliminary evaluation. Should you choose to pay for a hip radiograph you might as well spend a few dollars more and have it evaluated by the O.F.A..

Best Regards, and Good Luck,

Bob-O

That is what I was thinking, I can't see having x-rays done now then again in June when she's a year, so yea if x-rays are done, which I am thinking I will, they will be sent off to OFA now. Thanks.

Hit the darn submit too soon.

Yes I live in the states. And no she has no problems getting up, or moving around, just won't put too much pressure on it, but will stand on it, if that makes sense.

Till I get her to the vet is there anything I can do for her? I try to keep her from being too active with my other dogs so it doesn't get worse, which is a task in its self.

Gracie had 4-5 bouts of pano as a pup. Her first one was very young, around 5 months so they x-rayed to make sure that was the problem. How to keep her still? Crate rest - that's the best way. Unless she self-limits, she will just keep going. Gracie had her OFA prelims done at 8 1/2 months. The OFA report stated she had pano when they were done. Did this affect the rating - no, as pano affects the long bones of the leg and OFA is looking at hips. When she had her finals done at age 2 (about 4 days after her birthday, I was anxious) and she passed.

Thank You Jen, that makes me feel a bit better, I don't think it is HD, as her parents and the rest of her family were all normals, but I know that there are no guarentees, she goes monday to get xrayed, so we will see then.

Ok just got back from the Vet, he said her hips looks good, so now off to OFA to see what they say about her prelims.

But her limping was caused by some soft tissue bruising on her knee.!! Such a relief!

Thank you for your help.
