What is a "pet" Malinois puppy? It lists it as females or males that are not working prospects. A family dog, first and foremost.  She will attend obedience training with me& my kids.I am not looking for a police or high drive military working dog. Walk/Run in Morning, my daughters are both in to running. We do a lot of hiking and activities on the weekend. One of the reasons for the dog is a running partner for my girls
But I do want her to be motivated to learn and be physically active, but also be protective over her family because she will be apart of our family. Is that a “pet” quality?

You are what's considered an active pet home and a pet quality puppy should do everything you want.

If you feel uncomforatable getting a pet quality pup from a working litter, then just get a pup from a showline litter.  Try
Broadcreek, Mystique or Trisorts Kennels.  Their dogs place at Westminster.

Also, you say that you want your pup to be protective around your family.  Are you sure?  How protective? In what way?  How are you going to train it?  Do you already have a qualified trainer lined up to work with you.  These are all things that you need to decide on first and then discuss with the breeder.

I might add Carousel and Alouette Kennels.  I do not have any personal information on these kennels since I am not interested in showline malinois.  But please check them out.  They may fit your needs.

Maybe you get a lab instead, or a golden retriever. What you are asking for is to buy a cull. THis should not be encouraged at all ever for the good of the breed. It is embarrassing to see someone with a Mal like what you are asking for.

Please think of the breed.

Stop reading all the posts in this forum about Malinois owners that only think that these dogs are running at one speed. Not all Mals are going be working class, high speed, special forces dogs, the way allot of members try to make them out to be, that is just not the case with all Mal’s. I would highly recommend that you visit a breeder and see what they are all about. Also do you have any friends or acquaintances that own Malinois?
Oh and the guy that offered you this advice:
“not to ruin the breed and buy a lab instead, or a golden retriever. It is embarrassing to see someone with a Mal like what you are asking for. Please think of the breed.””
“Jeff Oehlsen” is a fool, like I said before Mals are not all cut out for sport or law enforcement. What should we start putting down the Mals that are not cut out for that type of work?
If you have noticed there aren’t a lot of members in this particular forum because some of them like to bully new people. Look, you are smart enough to be trying to find out more about the breed; do not listen to that guy. There are some good people here that are responsible owners and are offering some good advice.
I will PM you with contact info and no I’m not a breeder, I’m a user of a high speed Mal and owner of a pet quality Mal. Hope I don’t embarrass you too much Jeff.

Yes, I call them culls. I have worked with "pet" mals and really what is the point.

As far as the advice from "Tom Hill" he is a fool. He thinks he knows better than the founders of the breed who bred this dog for it's working ability only. What an ego on this person.

Bullying ?

by asomich on 16 March 2012 - 18:03

I had already suggested several breeders to Steve thru pm's - responsible breeders who know their lines and would be able to select a pet quality pup with a good temperament for him - not just sell him crap.  But I think that as the more he looks into mals, he is starting to freak out about the true purpose of the breed.  I was picking up that he doesn't feel comfortable with a pet quality pup knowing that its parents and siblings do a bitesport.  So that is why I mentioned the showline breeders.  But I think Jeff's idea of changing breeds is a better idea.

Thank you. I did not know stating an opinion would be considered bullying.

And, for the record, Mals that do not do the work are culled. There is no point going the same way as all the other breeds just because people do not have the stones to do what is required as a responsible breeder of an extreme working breed.

Wow you are calling yourself one of the founders of the breed? Really, and you say I have an ego.

Hey here is the definition of a cull:
Definition of CULL transitive verb
1: to select from a group : choose <culled the best passages from the poet's work>
2 : to reduce or control the size of (as a herd) by removal (as by hunting) of especially weaker animals; also: to hunt or kill (animals) as a means of population control
— cull·ernoun

Examples of CULL
He culls his herd annually.
The town issued hunting licenses in order to cull the deer population.

“There is no point going the same way as all the other breeds just because people do not have the stones to do what is required as a responsible breeder of an extreme working breed.”

I agree, we should do it with humans that don’t meet the physical and mental characteristics of what we were intended for.  You know what I mean we should take them out and euthanize people who can’t hunt or take care of themselves and I don’t mean with modern weapons or transportation, because this means we would have evolved . Who are you to determine what the breed will evolve into? You talk about an ego, go look in the mirror.
