Two weekes ago we took our 4 month old shepard to the vet w/ some sort of skin irritant & she was diagnosed w/ demodex mange. We are currently taking her once a week for a Mitaban dip. My question is...Should I allow my vet to put her on Ivermectin? I have read on Thepetcenter.com that it is not for ANY breed of shepards. Is this correct? I also have just started s small sprinkling of Echenasia (sp?), Astralagus & Reichi to boost her imune system. Is this a good idea as well?

I don't know about Demodex in GSD's but with AB's -some people swear by the Ivermectin to clean it up.

Does she have Demodex all over or just in a few small patches?

Hello!

Demodex can not disapear if you dont get the dog something,in sweden we give them Ivomec(ivermectin) or pills Interceptor,in Interceptor there is no ivermectin so maybe the pills are better for a puppy.

But the puppy must have this for a long time.

I strongly suggest you follow your vets' instructions. Failure to do so may really cause serious trouble. There are no contraindications in GSD for this medication if used appropriately.

I consider myself an expert with rehabbing GSD's from Demodectic and Sarcoptic mange.
You are dealing with juvenile demodectic mange. This is common to GSD's thats immuno-system has not developed sufficiently. The cause of the weakened immuno system could be genetic. From what I understand, all dogs have mange mites. It's the immunosystem that keeps the mites in check and not allow them to proliferate. NO MITOBAN!!!!!! NO DIPS!!!!!!.

300 mcg of Ivermectin based on body weight. Ivermec is an injectable solution formulated at 200 mcg per in it's present form.

Ivermectin is to be given daily ORALLY in the food. You can obtain Ivermec without a prescription from many farm supply otlets such as Agway. Soak 1 1/2 cups -2 cups of kibble in warm water for 20 minutes.Add  2 scoops of Whey protein powder and 1/2-3/4 pound of RAW ground beef. The pup needs a very high protein diet to overcome and prevail until the immunosystem fully develops. Don't panic. Vets are assholes when it comes to diagnosing and treating mange . They see an opportunity to stretch out and milk the malady for as much as you can pay. The pup will recover in 2-4 months. No other treatment necassary other than the Ivermectin

Best Luck & Patience

Mange is common in puppies with a developing immune system, also overvaccination will sometimes cause outbreakes.

If the mange is only in a few spots (localized), you can mix some mitaban with baby oil & rub some on the spots.  If the mange is many spots spread out (generalized), you should dip with mitaban. DO NOT dip if it is only localized!  Mitaban is very toxic and dipping is often very hard on the dog.  Ivermectin works very well also, and can treat both localized and generalized.

Try and boost the immune system the best you can.

Jim, How long can you give Ivermectin for Demodex? At the dose you suggested?

I understand that it is a problem here in the UK. My Vet uses ADVANTAGE and  it clears up  very well.

I wonder if your vet perhaps mixed up his words when he said no ivermectin for shepherds.  Collies have a high sensitivity to this drug, but i have not heard of it being a problem with shepherds.
