this morning there is an article "A special bond between soldiers" on the front page of the Los Angeles Times. featured are a german shepherd dog Staff Sgt. Iron and his handler Sgt. Joshua T. Rose. it's very interesting and non-political. they also mention that, along with sar and explosives detection dogs, the military is starting to incorporate therapy dogs for the soldiers. it's a good article and worth checking out. if a copy of the times isn't available, go to www.latimes.com

Really good article it's in the world section. The military does no favor to these dogs. A good percentage of them are killed when they retire because the military doesn't think they will fit into society.
To adopt a military dog thru Lackland AFB is a long and tedious process. You would think the military would treat these war hoeros with the prorper respect. They should have earned at least that much.

I couldn't find the article but if they are adding therapy dogs for the soldiers, that is probably the best idea I have heard in a long time. I know if I was over there, I would miss my pets terribly and would perk up at any chance to pet or visit with a dog.

4pack, two black labs were sent to be therapy dogs to work w/soldiers in iraq. hopefully, they will see the benefit and send more. as we all know, just petting/hugging your dog after a crappy day in a "safe" place does wonders for our physical and mental health - imagine what that could do for our people in iraq! maybe give our people a lifeline and outlet for their emotions that they have to suppress while on duty.
larrydee, i don't have any idea how hard it is to adopt one of these dogs. i agree that they should be treated with great care and respect, but i would imagine they have to be very cautious about WHO they adopt to. these dogs are trained military - not just anyone would be able to handle them. if nothing else, it'd be nice for the "unadoptable" dogs to be retired to live out their lives in comfort. maybe used to help train "new" handlers before they get a dog of their own?
